Introduction:

Cheesy scalloped potatoes are an ultimate comfort food that are perfect for gatherings, holidays, or just a delicious family dinner. This classic dish is made by layering thinly sliced potatoes with a rich and creamy cheese sauce, and then baking it all together until golden and bubbly. In this article, we will walk you through a step-by-step guide on how to make scrumptious scalloped potatoes.

Ingredients:

– 6 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced

– 4 tablespoons butter

– 1/4 cup all-purpose flour

– Salt and pepper, to taste

– 2 cups milk

– 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese

– 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

– 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

– Fresh parsley or chives for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Once the butter has melted, add in the flour and whisk to combine. Cook the flour mixture for approximately two minutes, stirring constantly to prevent burning.

3. Gradually add the milk to the flour mixture while continuously whisking. Season with salt, pepper, and garlic powder (if using). Bring the mixture to a boil while whisking constantly. Once boiling, reduce heat to low and let it simmer until the sauce thickens, stirring occasionally.

4. Remove the saucepan from heat and add in one cup of shredded cheddar cheese and half of the grated Parmesan cheese. Stir until the cheeses are fully melted and incorporated into the sauce.

5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the bottom of your prepared baking dish, ensuring they are overlapping slightly. Pour half of the cheese sauce evenly over the potatoes, then add the remaining potatoes in another layer. Pour the rest of the cheese sauce on top, covering all the potatoes.

6. Sprinkle the remaining shredded cheddar cheese and Parmesan cheese over the top of the dish. Cover with aluminum foil and place it in the preheated oven.

7. Bake the dish covered for 45 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 30-35 minutes or until the potatoes are tender and the top is golden and bubbly.

8. Optional: Once your cheesy scalloped potatoes are done baking, let them rest for about 5-10 minutes to set up before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives before serving if desired.

Conclusion:

By following this simple recipe, you can create a mouthwatering cheesy scalloped potatoes dish that will impress your guests and satisfy your cravings for a creamy, delicious side dish. Enjoy it on special occasions or simply treat yourself to a comforting meal anytime you like!
