Detroit-style pizza is a delicious and unique twist on traditional pizza. Originating from the Motor City itself, this style of pizza is known for the caramelized cheese crust, thick and fluffy dough, and a generous layer of toppings. If you’re craving a mouthwatering and satisfying Detroit-style pizza, you’re in luck! This recipe will guide you on how to make the best Detroit-style pizza at home with ease.

Ingredients:

For the Dough:

– 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

– 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) instant yeast

– 1 1/2 teaspoons sugar

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 3/4 cup warm water (105°F to 110°F)

For the Sauce:

– 1 can (15 ounces) crushed tomatoes

– 2 cloves garlic, minced

– 1 teaspoon dried oregano

– 1 teaspoon dried basil

– Salt and pepper to taste

For the Toppings:

– 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

– 2 cups shredded brick cheese (or white cheddar)

– 1 cup pepperoni slices (or other preferred toppings)

– Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add in warm water while stirring until a soft, sticky dough forms. Using your hands or a wooden spoon, mix until well combined.

2. Knead the dough: Lightly flour your work surface and transfer the dough onto it. Knead for about 5 minutes or until the dough is smooth and elastic. If needed, add more flour to prevent sticking.

3. Let the dough rise: Place the kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a clean towel. Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free area for approximately 1.5 – 2 hours or until it doubles in size.

4. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) and position the oven rack in the lowest position.

5. Prepare the sauce: In a medium saucepan, combine the crushed tomatoes, minced garlic, dried oregano, dried basil, salt, and pepper to taste. Simmer the sauce over low heat for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Once thickened, remove from heat and set aside.

6. Prepare the pizza pan: Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking pan or Detroit-style pizza pan with olive oil. Press the risen dough into the pan, stretching it to reach all edges and corners.

7. Layer your toppings: Sprinkle an even layer of mozzarella and brick cheese on top of the dough, making sure it reaches all corners of the pan. Distribute the pepperoni or other preferred toppings across the cheese layer evenly.

8. Bake your pizza: Place your pizza in the preheated oven on the lowest rack and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and cheese is caramelized along the edges.

9. Add sauce: Remove your pizza from the oven and spoon dollops of prepared sauce over its surface.

10. Cool and serve: Allow your Detroit-style pizza to cool for about 5 minutes before cutting into squares using a sharp knife or pizza cutter. Finish with fresh basil leaves if desired, then serve while still warm and enjoy!

By following this simple recipe for Detroit-style pizza, you’ll bring this Motor City classic right into your home kitchen. It’s sure to be a hit with friends and family.
