Can’t Open HEIC Files on Windows? Here’s How to Fix It

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format) is a file format for images that is used on Apple devices. Apple introduced this format to reduce the size of image files and allow users to store more images on their devices without taking up too much space. However, if you try to open an HEIC file on a Windows PC, you might encounter some issues.

The problem is that Windows doesn’t support HEIC files by default. This means that if you try to open an HEIC file on Windows, you may get an error message or the file may show up as a blank image. But don’t worry, there are several ways to fix this issue. In this article, we will show you how to open HEIC files on Windows.

Method 1: Convert HEIC files to JPEG format

The easiest way to open HEIC files on Windows is to convert them to JPEG format. JPEG is a common image format that is supported by most operating systems, including Windows. You can use an online converter or a software tool to convert HEIC files to JPEG format.

One of the most popular online HEIC to JPEG converters is Cloudconvert. Here’s how you can use it:

1. Go to cloudconvert.com/heic-to-jpg

2. Click on the “Select File” button and choose the HEIC file you want to convert.

3. Click on the “Start Conversion” button and wait for the conversion to finish.

4. Once the conversion is complete, click on the “Download” button to save the converted file to your computer.

Method 2: Install HEIC codec on Windows

Another way to open HEIC files on Windows is to install an HEIC codec. A codec is a software component that can decode a specific type of file format. In this case, you need to install an HEIC codec that can decode HEIC files on Windows.

One of the most popular HEIC codecs for Windows is the HEIF Image Extension from Microsoft. Here’s how you can install it:

1. Go to Microsoft Store (search “Microsoft Store” in Windows search bar)

2. Search for “HEIF Image Extensions” and click on it to open the Microsoft Store page for the codec.

3. Click on the “Get” button to download and install the codec.

4. Once the installation is complete, you should be able to open HEIC files on Windows without any issues.

Method 3: Use a third-party image viewer

If you don’t want to convert HEIC files or install an HEIC codec, you can use a third-party image viewer that can open HEIC files on Windows. There are several third-party image viewers available that support HEIC files, such as IrfanView, FastStone Image Viewer, and XnView.

Here’s how you can use IrfanView to open HEIC files on Windows:

1. Download and install IrfanView from the official website.

2. Download and install the HEIC Plugin for IrfanView from the official website.

3. Double-click on the HEIC file you want to open.

4. Choose IrfanView as the default program to open HEIC files if prompted.

Conclusion

Opening HEIC files on Windows is not difficult if you know how to do it. You can convert HEIC files to JPEG format, install an HEIC codec, or use a third-party image viewer to open HEIC files on Windows. Regardless of the method you choose, you’ll be able to view your HEIC images on your Windows PC in no time.
