The City of Bloomington is set to make a significant change to parking on E 6th Street between Walnut and Washington streets. In a move aimed at improving safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists, the city will convert the existing front-in angle parking to back-in angle parking.

This change comes after a scheduled repaving on November 26 and 27, during which all 41 existing parking spaces will be restriped. The adjustment will also include the creation of one accessible parking space with an aisle on the northwest corner of the block.

City officials cite improved visibility as the primary benefit of back-in angle parking. By reversing into a space, drivers will have a clear view of approaching traffic, cyclists, and pedestrians when pulling out, reducing the risk of accidents. This method of parking is also expected to create a safer environment for passengers, especially children, by positioning vehicle doors as a barrier to prevent stepping directly into the street.

The decision to implement this change was influenced by data showing eight backing crashes due to limited visibility in the area since 2018. The city hopes that this proactive measure will significantly reduce such incidents and create a safer urban environment for all road users.
