With its stunning landscapes and a wealth of child-friendly activities, Hawaii’s Big Island offers an unforgettable adventure for families. Here are some of the best things to do with kids on the Big Island:

1. Visit Hawaii Volcanoes National Park: Exploring the extraordinary landscape sculpted by volcanic activity will fascinate children of all ages. The park offers junior ranger programs and easy trails like Nahuku (Thurston Lava Tube), making it perfect for families.

2. Snorkel at Kealakekua Bay: This Marine Life Conservation District is famed for its clear waters and vibrant marine life, including colorful fish and coral. It’s also a famous historical site as the location where Captain James Cook first landed on the island.

3. Go to a Luau: An entertaining way to experience Hawaiian culture is through a luau, which usually includes traditional food, music, and hula dancing.

4. Explore Hilo’s Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo: As America’s only rainforest zoo, it houses over 80 animal species in naturalistic habitats, including a white Bengal tiger and spider monkeys.

5. Take a Stargazing Tour: The Mauna Kea Observatory offers stargazing programs suitable for children. The Visitor Information Station at 9,200 feet provides telescopes for viewing the night sky.

6. Visit the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach: Seeing a beach with black sand is exciting for kids, and if you’re lucky, you might also spot basking green sea turtles.

7. Experience the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden: A stunning collection of tropical plants awaits along easy walking trails that are perfect for little explorers.

8. Ride through Waipi’o Valley on Horseback: For older kids, horseback riding tours offer an authentic way to see the lush landscapes and hidden waterfalls of Waipi’o Valley.

9. Swim with Manta Rays: Family-friendly boat tours allow you to snorkel with these gentle giants in their natural habitat – an unforgettable experience for both kids and adults.

10. Enjoy Family Beach Time: With numerous beaches like Hapuna Beach or Anaeho’omalu Bay (A-Bay), spending a day building sandcastles or playing in the waves is always delightful.

By incorporating these activities into your Big Island itinerary, you’re sure to create lasting memories with your children amidst Hawaii’s natural wonders.
