Spread the love

Bloomington, Indiana, is a vibrant city known for its lively arts scene, lush parks, and academic buzz, thanks to Indiana University’s main campus. Whether you’re visiting for a weekend or looking to explore local spots, here are some of the best things to do in Bloomington.

Explore Indiana University Campus

The IU campus is stunning with its classic limestone buildings and beautiful green spaces. Take a self-guided tour and revel in the Gothic architecture of the Indiana University Auditorium and the iconic Sample Gates. Don’t miss out on the IU Art Museum, designed by world-renowned architect I.M. Pei, which houses an impressive collection ranging from ancient gold jewelry to modern art.

Attend a Performance at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater

This restored 1920s venue is the heart of Bloomington’s performing arts scene, hosting over 200 events each year. Check their calendar for a live concert, dance performance, or film screening during your stay.

Monroe Lake Activities

Just southeast of Bloomington lies Monroe Lake, Indiana’s largest land-bound body of water. It’s perfect for boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking around its scenic environs. Several trails offer stunning views of the lake and lush forests.

Enjoy Local Eats at Farmers’ Market

The Bloomington Community Farmers’ Market is open every Saturday from April through November. It’s a feast for the senses with locally grown produce, artisanal foods, and live music. It’s a great place to sample local flavors and meet the friendly residents.

Cycle or Walk on B-Line Trail

The B-Line Trail is a 3.1-mile trail that offers a paved path through downtown Bloomington and beyond. It’s ideal for walkers and cyclists alike. Alongside it are breweries, cafes, restaurants, and public art installations — perfect impromptu stops as you enjoy the outdoor space.

Visit Oliver Winery

This picturesque winery just north of Bloomington offers tastings in their beautiful tasting room or on their expansive grounds overlooking the vines. Sip on award-winning wines and take in the peaceful surroundings.

Discover Nature at Griffy Lake Nature Preserve

Get away from city life with a visit to Griffy Lake Nature Preserve. You can hike various trails, rent canoes or kayaks to explore the lake waters, or simply relax in serenity surrounded by nature.

Remember that Bloomington isn’t just about these singular experiences; it’s also about the warmth and vibrancy of its community. Engage with locals at any opportunity to truly understand what makes this Midwestern gem unique.
