Introduction:

Challah bread is a traditional Jewish bread that is enjoyed by many during Sabbath dinners, or simply as a delicious addition to your everyday meal. This rich and fluffy braided bread has an enticing aroma and delightful taste, making it a crowd favorite. In this article, we will share the best Challah bread recipe and guide you through the process of making it at home.

Ingredients:

– 1 cup warm water (110°F/45°C)

– 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

– 1/2 cup granulated sugar

– 1/4 cup vegetable oil

– 2 large eggs

– 1 egg yolk (reserve the egg white for the egg wash)

– 4 cups all-purpose flour

– 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

1. Activate the yeast: Combine warm water and sugar in a large mixing bowl, stirring until the sugar has dissolved. Add the active dry yeast and let it sit for about five minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. Combine wet ingredients: Add vegetable oil, two eggs, and one egg yolk to the yeast mixture. Stir well to combine.

3. Mix in the dry ingredients: Gradually add in flour and salt, mixing until dough starts to form. You may not need the entire four cups of flour, so watch for when your dough is no longer sticky.

4. Knead the dough: On a floured surface, knead the dough for about ten minutes or until it’s smooth and elastic.

5. Let the dough rise: Place your kneaded dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for about two hours or until doubled in size.

6. Preheat oven: As you near the end of your rising time, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

7. Divide and braid the dough: Punch down the dough and divide it into three to six equal-sized strands. Roll each strand into a long rope, about 12 inches in length. Braid the strands together, pinching the ends to secure.

8. Prepare egg wash: In a small bowl, beat the reserved egg white with a tablespoon of water to create an egg wash.

9. Apply egg wash and allow a final rise: Transfer your braided Challah to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush the entire surface of the loaf with the egg wash, then let it rest for 20-30 minutes for a final rise.

10. Bake: Place your Challah in your preheated oven on a middle rack and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown. If the top begins to brown too quickly, loosely cover it with aluminum foil.

11. Cool and enjoy: Once your Challah is done baking, remove it from the oven and allow it to cool on a wire rack before serving.

And there you have it – the best Challah bread recipe you can make in your own kitchen! Enjoy this delightful bread as a delicious side to any meal, or even as the star of your next Sabbath dinner. Happy baking!
