Introduction:

Apple galette is a rustic, French-inspired dessert that combines the delicious flavors of apples, cinnamon, and sugar wrapped in a buttery, flaky pastry crust. This simple yet elegant dish is perfect for special occasions or as a cozy treat on chilly autumn evenings. So, let’s dive into the world of apple galettes and learn how to make the best apple galette recipe.

Ingredients:

For the pastry:

– 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour

– ¼ teaspoon salt

– 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

– ½ cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

– ¼ cup ice-cold water

For the filling:

– 4 medium-sized apples (such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Golden Delicious), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

– ¼ cup granulated sugar

– 2 tablespoons brown sugar

– 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

– ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg

– Juice of half a lemon

For glazing:

– 1 egg yolk

– 1 tablespoon heavy cream or milk

– Coarse sugar (optional)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the pastry dough: In a food processor or using a pastry cutter by hand, combine flour, salt, and granulated sugar. Add cold cubed butter and pulse or cut until the mixture resembles coarse meal. Gradually add ice-cold water while pulsing or stirring until the dough starts to come together.

2. Turn out the dough onto a lightly floured surface and form a disc about an inch thick. Wrap tightly with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least one hour.

3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

4. In a large mixing bowl, toss together the sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice.

5. Take the chilled dough out of the refrigerator and roll it out on a lightly floured surface to form a 12-inch circle. Transfer dough to the prepared baking sheet.

6. Arrange the apple slices on top of the dough, leaving about 2 inches of border at the edges. Fold up the edges of the dough over the apples to create a pleated, rustic crust around the filling. Press gently to ensure that the pastry adheres well.

7. In a small bowl, whisk together egg yolk and cream or milk. Brush egg mixture onto folded pastry edges and, if desired, sprinkle with coarse sugar for added crunch.

8. Place the galette in preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and apples are tender.

9. Remove galette from oven and let it cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Conclusion:

Now you have a delectable apple galette that’s perfect for any occasion! Serve warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top for a truly indulgent experience. This simple recipe may look impressive, but it’s easy enough for even beginner bakers to create an elegant dessert that will impress friends and family alike. Enjoy!
