As a Credit Card Expert, I Use This Southwest Perk to Get Nearly Free Flights for Companions

As a seasoned credit card expert, I have spent years examining the plethora of benefits that come with various types of cards. Amongst the many perks available, there is one that consistently stands out for frequent flyers: the Southwest Companion Pass. This lucrative perk has become my go-to tool for securing nearly free flights for companions whenever I travel with Southwest Airlines.

The Companion Pass is essentially a buy-one-get-one ticket feature that allows the cardholder to choose one person to fly with them for free (excluding taxes and fees) every time they purchase a flight or redeem points for a flight on Southwest Airlines. The beauty of this perk is that it’s not limited to just one flight; it’s valid for the remainder of the year in which you earn it and the entire following year. This can translate into substantial savings, especially for those who travel regularly with a partner or family member.

So how does one earn this enviable benefit? To qualify for the Companion Pass, you need to earn 125,000 qualifying points or fly 100 qualifying one-way flights in a calendar year. That might sound daunting, but it’s eminently achievable, particularly through strategic use of Southwest’s co-branded credit cards. These cards offer generous sign-up bonuses and ongoing rewards on purchases that can help you quickly rack up points towards Companion Pass status.

When utilizing Southwest co-branded credit cards, it is imperative to pay close attention to spending categories that earn extra points. Regular expenditures like dining out and shopping can help accumulate points when you make use of bonus categories. Also, special promotions throughout the year can boost your point balance, edging you closer to achieving the pass.

Another beneficial strategy is timing your credit card applications and spending to optimize point collection. By applying for a card when it offers a high sign-up bonus and aligning your big-ticket purchases to hit the minimum spend requirement can provide a hefty points boost.

Once earned, using the Companion Pass is straightforward. You book your flight with cash or points and add your designated companion by only paying taxes and fees for their ticket. One of the most commendable aspects of this perk is its flexibility—it allows you to change your chosen companion up to three times in a calendar year, making it ideal for those whose travel companions may vary.

In conclusion, as an avid user of the Southwest Companion Pass, I cannot overstate its value for frequent travelers looking to save money. It’s one of those rare perks that can turn a good value credit card into an exceptional one when leveraged effectively. With strategic planning and judicious spending habits, any regular flyer on Southwest Airlines could turn their regular jaunts into nearly free adventures for their companions—just as I have done numerous times over the years.
