Apple Watch Series 1 review: The most affordable Apple Watch is still a good option

The Apple Watch Series 1, despite its age, still stands robust in the market today and continues to be an economically viable option for those familiar with the Apple ecosystem.

Launched in 2015, the Series 1 doesn’t have the edge-to-edge display of its successors but the Retina OLED display unfurls satisfactory visuals. Encased in aluminum with an Ion-X glass layer on the surface, it is durable and functional for daily usage.

Underneath, it is powered by a dual-core S1P processor which, regardless of being slower than the newer models’ processors, still keeps up with routine tasks – responding to texts or calendar reminders on time. It uses watchOS 3 as its operating system but is upgradeable to watchOS 6. However, note that it cannot support the latest watchOS updates.

For health monitoring, it proffers features such as heart rate monitor and activity tracking. Working of these primary health-related features is seamless but it lacks the advanced fitness tools present in modern generation watches like ECG or SpO2 monitor.

One element where Apple Watch Series 1 really shines through is battery life. Its power efficiency provides around 18 hours of usage on a single charge providing an all-day companion.

When it comes to connectivity, this watch supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi but sadly lacks GPS functionality. However, as long as you have your iPhone nearby that should not pose much of a problem.

The ease of syncing with other relevant Apple devices gives it an edge for iPhone users over various other affordable smartwatches dominating the market today.

In conclusion, while the Apple Watch Series 1 may lack some advanced features present in newer smartwatch models from Apple and other brands, it prominently embodies essential functionalities making it a suitable low-cost choice for those looking for basic smartwatch capabilities from a reputable brand like Apple. Its enduring design combined with exceptional user interface backed by adequate features make it a worthwhile option even years after its release.
