Create several sentences by writing them on index cards or whiteboard. Each sentence should include a linking verb, a predicate noun, or a predicate adjective. For example: The weather is cold. Students then sort the sentences into the correct categories, identifying the linking verb, predicate noun, or predicate adjective.

2. Identify the linking verb

Provide a list of verbs and ask the students to identify which ones are linking verbs. You can also create a sentence with a blank space and ask them to fill in the blank with the correct linking verb. For example: The soup _____ delicious. (is)

3. Find the predicate noun

Provide a list of nouns and ask the students to identify which ones can be predicate nouns. Alternatively, provide a sentence with a blank space and ask them to fill in the blank with the correct predicate noun. For example: My favorite color is _____. (blue)

4. Adjective or Adverb

Provide a list of adjectives and adverbs and ask students to identify which ones are predicate adjectives. Alternatively, create a sentence with a blank space and ask them to fill in the blank with the correct adjective. For example: The cat looks _____ happy. (happy)

5. Color-coded sentences

Create sentences on a whiteboard or index cards and color-code the linking verb, predicate noun, and predicate adjective. For example: (using blue for nouns, green for verbs, and purple for adjectives) The flowers smell sweet.

By breaking down sentences and helping students identify linking verbs, predicate adjectives, and predicate nouns, students can understand how to create more complex and sophisticated sentences. These activities can help them find a deeper understanding of language which will hopefully translate into better sentence structure and stronger writing skills.
