What Is Wardriving? How to Protect Yourself

Wardriving is the practice of driving around in a vehicle with a wireless-enabled device, such as a laptop or smartphone, to search for wireless access points. This can include open wireless networks that can be accessed without a password, as well as secure networks that require a password to access. While wardriving can be a fun hobby for some, it can also be used for malicious purposes, such as stealing personal information or attempting to hack into networks.

To protect yourself from wardriving, there are several actions you can take:

1. Secure your wireless network: If you have a wireless network at home or work, make sure it is password-protected with a strong password. This will make it more difficult for wardrivers to access your network.

2. Disable Wi-Fi: If you’re not using Wi-Fi on your device, disable it. This will prevent your device from automatically connecting to open and potentially unsecured networks.

3. Keep your device updated: Make sure your device’s operating system and security software are up-to-date. This will help protect your device from any known security vulnerabilities.

4. Use a Virtual Private Network (VPN): A VPN will encrypt your internet connection and keep your online activity hidden from prying eyes, including wardrivers. There are several free and paid VPN services available.

5. Avoid using public Wi-Fi: If possible, avoid accessing sensitive information or performing financial transactions while connected to public Wi-Fi networks. These networks are often unsecured and can be easily intercepted by wardrivers.

In conclusion, wardriving can be a potential threat to your personal information and security. By taking the above precautions, you can help protect yourself and your devices from potential harm. Stay safe and secure!
