Subscript is a feature that allows you to type certain text or characters in a smaller font size and position it slightly below the regular text line. This can be helpful when you need to write chemical formulas, mathematical equations, or any other type of text that requires a lower position. Fortunately, Microsoft Word has a straightforward method for typing superscripts and subscripts. In this article, we will walk you through the steps on how to do subscript in Word.

Method 1: Using the Subscript button

The easiest way to do subscript in Word is by using the subscript button in the Font group of the Home tab. Here’s how:

1. Open a new or existing Word document.

2. Type the text that you want to format as subscript.

3. Select the part of the text that you want to subscript. You can select a single character, a word, or a group of words.

4. In the Font group of the Home tab, click the subscript button (x2). Alternatively, you can press Ctrl + = keys on your keyboard.

5. The selected text will now appear in subscript format.

Method 2: Using keyboard shortcuts

If you frequently use subscripts in your work, you can save time and effort by using keyboard shortcuts. Here’s how:

1. Open a new or existing Word document.

2. Type the text that you want to format as subscript.

3. Select the part of the text that you want to subscript.

4. Press the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + –

5. The selected text will now appear in subscript format.

Method 3: Using the Font dialog box

If you need to adjust the size or position of the subscript, you can use the Font dialog box. Here’s how:

1. Open a new or existing Word document.

2. Type the text that you want to format as subscript.

3. Select the part of the text that you want to subscript.

4. In the Font group of the Home tab, click the dialog box launcher (small arrow icon) to open the Font dialog box.

5. In the Font dialog box, select the Subscript checkbox in the Effects section.

6. You can also adjust the size of the subscript by typing a number in the Size box, or by using the up and down arrows to increase or decrease the size.

7. Click OK to apply the changes.

In conclusion, formatting text as subscript in Word is a simple process that can help you create professional-looking documents. You can use the subscript button, keyboard shortcuts, or the Font dialog box to achieve the desired effect. By following the steps outlined in this article, you’ll be able to easily format your text as subscript in Word.
