The Fn key on a Windows keyboard is a special function key that enables you to perform tasks such as adjusting volume, changing screen brightness, and controlling multimedia playback. It is usually located near the bottom left corner of the keyboard, and pressing it together with other keys activates various special functions.

However, the Fn key can sometimes be a nuisance, especially if you accidentally press it instead of another key, which can cause unexpected results or prevent you from typing certain characters. Fortunately, Windows has several ways to lock and unlock the Fn key, making it easy to use the keyboard in a way that fits your needs.

Method 1: Use the BIOS Setup

One of the most straightforward ways to lock or unlock the Fn key is by changing the settings in the BIOS Setup, which is a firmware program that controls the basic operations of your computer. Here is how to do it:

1. Restart your computer and press the key that appears on your screen to enter the BIOS Setup. This key varies depending on your computer’s manufacturer but is usually F2, F10, or Delete.

2. Navigate to the Advanced tab using the arrow keys and look for a setting called Function Key Behavior or Action Keys Mode.

3. Change the Function Key Behavior option from Multimedia Key to Function Key or vice versa, depending on which mode you prefer. Multimedia Key mode means the Fn key will function as a multimedia key, while Function Key mode means it will work as a regular function key.

4. Save the changes and exit the BIOS Setup. Your computer will restart, and the Fn key should now be locked or unlocked, depending on your choice.

Method 2: Use the Keyboard Settings

If you don’t want to mess with the BIOS, you can also lock or unlock the Fn key using the keyboard settings in Windows. Here’s how to do it:

1. Press the Windows key + I to open the Settings app.

2. Click on Devices and then on Keyboard on the left pane.

3. Look for an option called Fn Key Behavior or Media Key Behavior.

4. Change the Fn Key Behavior setting to either Multimedia Key or Function Key, depending on your preference.

5. Close the Settings app or continue to adjust any other settings you desire.

Method 3: Use a Third-Party App

If the two methods above do not work or you prefer a more flexible solution, you can use a third-party app to lock or unlock the Fn key. There are numerous applications available online that can do this, such as SharpKeys, EasyTune, and KeyTweak.

These apps allow you to modify the keyboard layout by switching the function of a key or disabling it altogether. Some even allow you to create custom shortcuts or macros for your keys, giving you full control over the way your keyboard works.
