Things to Do With an Old Computer

Technology is advancing at a rapid pace and it is natural to find ourselves having old computers lying around our homes. These are often outdated and not useful to us anymore but that doesn’t mean they should just be discarded. Before you throw your old computer away, here are a few things you can do with it.

1. Turn it into a Home Media Centre

With the help of software like Kodi or Plex, you can turn your old computer into an entertainment hub. Connect it to a TV or audio system, which makes it even easier to browse and play your favourite music, movies, and TV shows.

2. Create a Dedicated Gaming PC

Old computers may not be suitable for a lot of modern games, but they can still handle retro gaming consoles and emulators. Install some popular emulators like RetroPie or MAME, and start playing classic games from the past.

3. Use it as a File or Printer Server

Your old computer can still be useful as a simple server to manage files or print jobs. You can connect external hard drives or printers to the computer, and use it to share those devices with other computers on your network.

4. Give it to a Charity or a School

Many charities or schools will welcome donations of old computers. They are often looking for computers to use in their work and they do not require fancy specifications. This way, you can help support a good cause while also doing something positive for the environment by recycling and reusing technology.

5. Recycle the Components

If you do decide to discard your old computer, make sure to recycle the components. The materials that are used to make electronic components are valuable and recyclable, which means they can be reused in new technology. Consult a local electronics recycling facility to dispose of your old computer properly.

In conclusion, there are many things you can do with an old computer, so don’t just throw it away. Whether you choose to turn it into a home media centre, gaming PC, or donate it to charity or school, there’s always a way to make use of this still-functional technology. Reusing or recycling old technology is not only environmentally friendly, but it can also help out your community too.

Since technology is not going anywhere and does more good than harm, adapting is the best course of action. That is where The Tech Edvocate comes in. We plan to cover the PreK-12 and Higher Education EdTech sectors and provide our readers with the latest news and opinion on the subject.
