China’s chip capabilities just 3 years behind TSMC, teardown shows

A recent teardown analysis of a cutting-edge Chinese smartphone chip has revealed that China’s semiconductor capabilities have significantly advanced, closing the gap with industry leader TSMC to a mere three years. This revelation underscores China’s rapid progress in its ambitious drive to achieve technological self-sufficiency.

The analysis, conducted by tech research firm TechInsights, focused on the Kirin 9000s, Huawei’s latest flagship processor. The chip’s architecture and manufacturing process were found to be remarkably close to TSMC’s advanced 5-nanometer (nm) technology, currently considered the industry gold standard. While still slightly lagging behind in terms of transistor density and overall performance, the 3-year gap represents a substantial narrowing from previous estimates.

This advancement comes amid China’s concerted efforts to reduce its reliance on foreign chip suppliers. The government has poured billions into research and development, fostering homegrown semiconductor companies like SMIC and Huawei HiSilicon. The Kirin 9000s, despite its limited production due to US sanctions, exemplifies the tangible progress achieved by China’s chip industry.

This development has far-reaching implications for the global semiconductor landscape. While TSMC remains the undisputed leader, China’s rapid progress signals a potential shift in power dynamics. The growing capabilities of Chinese chipmakers could lead to increased competition and pressure on TSMC, potentially impacting pricing and supply chains. It also highlights the ongoing technological rivalry between China and the US, with implications for geopolitical stability and global supply chains.

The future of the chip industry is likely to be defined by this intensifying competition. As China continues to invest heavily in semiconductor technology, its chip capabilities are poised to make further significant strides, narrowing the gap with global leaders and shaping the future of the technology landscape.
