Bell peppers are not only an outstanding source of vitamins and nutrients but also a versatile ingredient that can add color and flavor to a wide range of dishes. However, the unique shape of these bright vegetables can make them somewhat tricky to cut. To help you efficiently prepare bell peppers, here are three methods you can use to cut them.

1. Cutting into Strips or Juliennes

This method yields long, thin strips of bell pepper suitable for stir-fries, fajitas, and salads.

– Begin by washing the pepper and removing the stem.

– Next, cut the pepper in half from top to bottom.

– Use a small spoon or paring knife to remove seeds and any white membrane without removing too much of the flesh.

– Lay one half flat on your cutting board with the skin side down.

– Hold the pepper steady and slice it into thin strips using a sharp chef’s knife.

– Repeat with the other half, then discard seeds and membranes.

2. Dicing

Dicing results in small, uniform pieces perfect for sauces, omelets, and stews.

– Begin by following steps 1 – 4 above.

– Place one strip of pepper with skin side down on your cutting board.

– Slice across several times widthwise to create evenly-sized squares.

– Repeat this step with remaining strips.

3. Cutting into Rings

Pepper rings add visual appeal to sandwiches or can be used as an edible garnish.

– Wash the pepper thoroughly and remove the stem.

– Stand it upright on its bottom end so that it is stable.

– Using a sharp knife, slice horizontally just below where stem was removed.

– Discard any seeds that may cling to your knife edge after each slice.

– Continue slicing downward until reaching the bottom of the bell pepper.

No matter what method you choose for cutting a bell pepper, remember that practice makes perfect. With a bit of time and patience, you’ll be able to efficiently and safely cut this nutritious vegetable, adding color and flavor to your favorite dishes.
