Being a stage manager is an art form that requires exceptional organizational skills, strong communication abilities, and a passion for theater. With responsibility for coordinating and overseeing all aspects of the production, good stage management is essential for a smooth and successful show. If you’re considering taking on the role of stage manager or looking to improve your skills, here are some tips and techniques to help you become a truly great stage manager.

1. Develop strong communication skills

Effective communication is one of the most important aspects of stage management. As a stage manager, you’ll be responsible for communicating with various members of the production team, including directors, actors, and technicians. Make sure to develop both your verbal and written communication skills so that everyone on the team stays well-informed about schedules, rehearsal notes, and any changes to the plan.

2. Keep organized

A good stage manager needs to maintain comprehensive records of all the elements involved in the production. This includes schedules, blocking notes, prop lists, and costume requirements. Make sure you have a well-organized system in place to keep everything in order – preferably both digitally and in print versions, as backups are always important.

3. Stay calm under pressure

In the world of theater, crises are inevitable – from forgotten lines to malfunctioning set pieces – and as a stage manager, it’s your responsibility to tackle these issues calmly and efficiently. Develop strategies for dealing with unexpected issues; keep a toolkit at hand with essential items like batteries or safety pins that can be used in emergencies.

4. Build relationships with your team

A successful stage manager needs to build trust and rapport with their team members so that they feel supported when faced with challenges during the production process. Take time to get acquainted with each person on your crew and establish open communication channels so that everyone can voice concerns or suggestions.

5. Cultivate time management skills

With numerous responsibilities and strict deadlines, managing your time effectively is crucial in order to ensure that all aspects of the production run smoothly. Develop tools and techniques for prioritizing tasks and staying on top of your schedule. Make use of technology like scheduling apps or software to streamline your workload.

6. Continuously learn and grow

The world of theater is ever-evolving, and it’s important for a good stage manager to stay up-to-date on industry trends and best practices. Attend workshops, networking events, and conferences to expand your knowledge base and skill set. Be open to feedback from fellow professionals; there’s always room for improvement.

7. Lead with confidence

Lastly, a great stage manager must possess strong leadership skills. In addition to managing the many logistical elements of the production, you’ll also have to inspire and motivate your team. Be decisive when making decisions, but also be approachable and open to suggestions from your team members.

By focusing on these seven key areas, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a good stage manager who can create unforgettable theater experiences for both participants and audiences alike.
