Introduction:

Swing dancing has been a popular social dance style for decades, dating back to the 1920s and undergoing several revivals since then. Characterized by its energetic and lively movements, swing dancing is an excellent way to have fun, meet new people, and express yourself through dance. In this article, we’ll explore three different ways to swing dance: the Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, and West Coast Swing.

1. Lindy Hop

The Lindy Hop originated in the 1920s in Harlem, New York, and is considered one of the earliest forms of swing dancing. It gained widespread popularity during the Big Band Era of the 1930s and ’40s. This partner dance is characterized by its syncopated rhythms, kicks, jumps, and aerial moves known as “air steps.”

To perform the Lindy Hop:

– Start in a relaxed closed position with your partner

– Begin with a basic eight-count step known as a “swing out”

– Add variations and patterns such as Charleston steps and circles

– Incorporate spins, turns, and even aerial moves as you become more comfortable

2. East Coast Swing

East Coast Swing evolved from Lindy Hop in the 1940s to cater to a wider audience. The dance is more compact than Lindy Hop, making it suitable for crowded dance floors. East Coast Swing is characterized by its six-count basic step composed of rock steps and triple steps.

To perform East Coast Swing:

– Start in a closed position with your partner

– Follow a six-count basic step pattern: rock-step, triple-step, triple-step

– Add variations such as spins, turns, and changes in hand positions

– Experiment with syncopations to add versatility to your dance style

3. West Coast Swing

This style emerged in California during the 1950s and gained popularity through dances like the Whip, Push, and Sugar Push. West Coast Swing is characterized by its smooth, elastic movement and an emphasis on styling and technique. The dance is performed in a linear “slot,” allowing partners to travel back and forth during the dance.

To perform West Coast Swing:

– Begin in an open position with your partner

– Follow a six-count basic step pattern: walk-walk, triple-step, triple-step

– Incorporate various turn patterns such as side passes, whip variations, and sugar pushes

– Add styling elements like body isolation, toe drags, and hip rolls

Conclusion:

There are many styles of swing dancing to explore, but Lindy Hop, East Coast Swing, and West Coast Swing are some of the most popular forms that you can try out. Each style has its own unique flavor and will challenge you in different ways. So grab a partner and hit the dance floor – you may just discover your new favorite pastime!
