The Best Place to Stay in Belgrade, Serbia – Travel Pockets

Belgrade, the vibrant capital of Serbia, is a city with a tumultuous history, resilient spirit, and an energetic vibe that welcomes travelers from around the globe. With its fascinating mix of Eastern and Western influences, rich history visible in the layers of varying architecture, and buzzing nightlife along the banks of the Sava and Danube rivers – finding the best place to stay in Belgrade is crucial to experiencing what this city has to offer.

The best place to stay in Belgrade would unquestionably be the Stari Grad, or Old Town. This central area of Belgrade encapsulates the history and culture that defines the city. Cobbled streets are lined with buildings bearing marks of various architectural styles—Ottoman relics side by side with Austro-Hungarian and socialist-era buildings—making every stroll an immersive history lesson.

For travelers who prioritize convenience and cultural immersion, staying in Stari Grad means you’re within walking distance from many iconic attractions. The Knez Mihailova Street, a pedestrianized zone and main shopping street, is bustling with activity and leads to the historic Kalemegdan Fortress. The fort offers stunning views over the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers as well as a beautiful park perfect for leisurely afternoons.

Accommodation options in this area range from luxury hotels like Square Nine Hotel Belgrade to cozy boutique offerings such as Hotel Moskva – an establishment steeped in history since it opened its doors in 1906. Travelers seeking a more local experience can opt for one of the many well-appointed Airbnb apartments throughout Stari Grad.

Another distinctive feature of staying in Belgrade’s Old Town is access to some of the city’s best eateries. From traditional Serbian cuisine at restaurants like Question Mark – the oldest tavern in Belgrade – to modern fusion establishments such as Homa Restaurant, there is something for every food enthusiast.

But it’s not just food and history that makes Stari Grad compelling. The area vibrates with local artistry and creativity found in several galleries and shops featuring handmade goods by Serbian artists. Moreover, as night falls, Strahinjića Bana street transforms into one of Belgrade’s most lively nightlife hubs with plenty of bars and clubs where you can experience true Serbian hospitality.

Choosing to stay in Stari Grad while visiting Belgrade ensures that you get an authentic taste of Serbia’s heart—a balance between living history, cultural depth, bustling life, and relaxation spots—all within arms’ reach. Whether you’re there for a weekend getaway or extended holiday, Old Town’s compelling charm will make your trip unforgettable.
