All 3 Willy Wonka Movies Ranked From Worst to Best

Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005), and Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (2017) are adaptations that have brought Roald Dahl’s beloved book to both big and small screens. They’ve been met with a variety of responses from audiences and critics alike.

Ranking at number three is Tom and Jerry: Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. This direct-to-video animated crossover featuring the famous cat and mouse duo turned out to be an unnecessary retelling of the classic story. While the film tried to blend in slapstick humor with the chocolatey tale, it didn’t resonate well with fans of either Tom and Jerry or Willy Wonka, primarily due to its odd pairing of characters and subpar animation.

Second place goes to Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Although this movie more closely follows the original book, it divides opinions due to Johnny Depp’s eccentric portrayal of Willy Wonka, which some found off-putting. The film boasts impressive visuals, a darker tone than its predecessor, and imaginative design but lacks the charm many associate with Dahl’s work.

Topping our list is none other than Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory starring Gene Wilder. Despite deviating from some elements in the book, Wilder’s performance strikes a perfect balance between whimsical and mysterious, making him a memorable Wonka who has stuck with audiences throughout generations. With memorable songs like “Pure Imagination” and Wilder’s unmatched portrayal, this adaptation continues to be a treasured classic that conjures up a sense of magic, wonder, and nostalgia.
