Amsterdam, the iconic city of canals, is also home to some spectacular bridges. With over 1,500 bridges embelleshing the city, each has a story that captivates tourists and locals alike. Here are 11 of the best bridges in Amsterdam that you should see.

1. MagereBrug (Skinny Bridge)

Arguably the most famous bridge in Amsterdam, MagereBrug is a traditional Dutch white-painted drawbridge made of wood. Connecting the banks of the river Amstel, it lights up beautifully at night and it’s rumored that a kiss on this bridge will bring everlasting love.

2. Blauwbrug (Blue Bridge)

Inspired by Parisian architecture, Blauwbrug boasts an ornate style with large arches and intricate streetlamps. Crossing the Amstel river, this bridge connects the Waterlooplein area to the Rembrandtplein.

3. Torensluis (Tower Lock)

Built in 1648, Torensluis is one of the oldest and widest bridges in Amsterdam. It spans the Singel canal and is known for its broadness due to containing an old prison underneath.

4. Python Bridge (High Bridge)

Winning international awards for its design, Python Bridge is an avant-garde feat with a red snaking pathway that connects Sporenburg to Borneo Island in Eastern Docklands.

5. Nesciobrug

As one of the longest cycling and walking bridges in Amsterdam, Nesciobrug offers stunning views of Diemerpark and IJmeer Lake. An example of fine modern engineering, this bridge is not to be missed by avid cyclists.

6. Jan Schaeferbrug

Inaugurated in 2001, Jan Schaeferbrug is a contemporary bridge which runs through the IJ harbor leading to the IJDock island. The unique structure includes parts that appear to float on water.

7. Staalmeestersbrug (Bridge of the Steel Masters)

This charming wooden bridge presents idyllic views of typical Dutch houses along the Groenburgwal canal and it’s a popular spot for photographers aiming to capture Amsterdam’s quintessential scenery.

8. EnneüsHeermabrug

Connecting Zeeburg with IJburg across the IJ lake, EnneüsHeermabrug stands out due to its unique cable-stayed design forming striking X-shaped pylons.

9. SintNicolaasbrug

Overlooking Amsterdam Central Station and situated next to St. Nicholas Church, SintNicolaasbrug is both essential for traffic flow and scenic canal views favored by artists.

10. Liebergesellbrug

Nestled within Vondelpark, Liebergesellbrug offers tranquil moments away from bustling city life with picturesque views of a calm water stream and lush greenery.

11. Haparandadam Pedestrian Bridge

Particularly interesting for its sleek industrial look, Haparandadam Pedestrian Bridge serves as a testament to Amsterdam’s shipbuilding past while connecting two parts of Houthavens district.

These bridges not only contribute to Amsterdam’s unique landscape but also stand as monuments reflecting centuries of history with their varying designs and purposes—from romantic spots to grand artistic expressions.
