How to Sew Joggers

Introduction
Joggers have become widely popular in the fashion world due to their versatility, comfort, and style. Although typically associated with loungewear, joggers now make appearances in various settings from the gym to social gatherings. Learning to sew your own pair allows you to customize them to your preference and save money in the process. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll cover how to create a cozy pair of joggers from scratch.
Material and Tools
To begin sewing your joggers, gather the following materials:
1. Fabric – Choose a suitable fabric, such as cotton jersey or French terry, in your desired color and pattern.
2. Elastic waistband – Measure your waist for an appropriate size.
3. Drawstring – Opt for cord or flat drawstring in a matching or contrasting color.
4. Sewing machine
5. Measurement tools – Ruler and tape measure
6. Scissors
7. Pins
8. Thread
9. Sewing needle
10. Jogger pattern – Available online or create one using an existing pair of joggers.
Instructions
Step 1: Wash and iron the fabric
Wash and iron the fabric prior to cutting to avoid any shrinkage or misalignment when sewing.
Step 2: Cut out pieces using the pattern
Lay out the pattern on the fabric, paying attention to grain lines and stretch direction. Cut out two front leg pieces, two back leg pieces, two waistbands, two ankle cuffs, and one drawstring piece.
Step 3: Sew front and back leg pieces together
Place one front leg piece right side up, followed by its corresponding back leg piece facing down. Pin together along the curved edge (crotch seam) and sew with a stretch stitch or zigzag stitch.
Repeat for the second set of front and back leg pieces.
Step 4: Connect the legs
With both sets of leg pieces right side out, align the inseams and pin together. Sew along the pinned inseam, creating one continuous piece.
Step 5: Sew the side seams
Turn the pant legs right side in, align the outer side seams, and pin. Sew both side seams using a stretch or zigzag stitch.
.Step 6: Prepare the waistband
Fold each waistband piece in half width-wise with right sides touching. Sew along the short edge using a zigzag or stretch stitch. Now, fold the waistband lengthwise with wrong sides touching and press.
Step 7: Attach waistband to joggers
Place the waistband inside the opening of the pants, aligning raw edges of both pieces. Match side seams and pin in place, stretching gently to fit as needed. Sew with a stretch or zigzag stitch.
Step 8: Insert elastic and drawstring
Make a small opening on one side seam of the waistband to insert both elastic and drawstring. Use a safety pin to thread them through before securely sewing ends together. Hand-stitch closed any openings.
Step 9: Sew ankle cuffs
Repeat Steps 6 and 7 for each ankle cuff and attach them to the bottom of each pant leg.
Step 10: Finishing touches
Trim all loose threads, press seams flat, and try on your newly-sewn joggers for ultimate comfort!
Conclusion
Creating your own unique pair of joggers is not only a satisfying DIY project but also opens up various opportunities for customization and design. Use different fabrics or mix-and-match panels for eye-catching looks that express your personal style. Soon enough, you’ll be known as a sewing pro in no time!
