3 Ways to Clean a Contact Lens Case

Introduction:

Contact lens cases can harbor bacteria and other potentially harmful contaminants if not properly cared for. Ensuring your contact lens case is clean is crucial in preventing eye infections and maintaining overall eye health. Here are three ways to effectively clean your contact lens case.

1. Daily Rinse with Multipurpose Solution:

Using a fresh, sterile multipurpose solution is the simplest method to clean your contact lens case. Follow these steps:

– Empty your contact lens case, disposing of any remaining solution.

– Rinse the case thoroughly with a sterile multipurpose solution, applying gentle pressure to help dislodge any particles or debris.

– Shake off excess solution and let the case air dry.

Avoid using tap water for rinsing and cleaning, as it may contain microorganisms that can lead to eye infections.

2. Weekly Deep Clean with Hydrogen Peroxide:

To ensure a thorough cleanse, use hydrogen peroxide on your contact lens case once a week. Here’s how:

– Empty the case and rinse it with a sterile multipurpose solution.

– Fill each compartment with 3% hydrogen peroxide, ensuring complete coverage of the inner surfaces.

– Allow the case to soak for at least 10 minutes.

– Empty the hydrogen peroxide and rinse the case thoroughly with multipurpose solution before air drying.

Note: Always use caution when handling hydrogen peroxide as it can cause irritation if it comes into direct contact with your eyes or skin.

3. Monthly Boil for Disinfection:

Boiling your contact lens case in water monthly will disinfect and remove stubborn build-up that might have been left behind by everyday cleaning methods. Here’s what you need to do:

– Bring enough water to cover your contact lens case to a rolling boil in a pot or kettle.

– Empty your contact lens case completely and place it into the boiling water.

– Boil the case for approximately 5 to 10 minutes.

– Remove the case using a clean utensil, being cautious of the hot water and steam.

– Let the case cool and air dry on a clean surface.

Conclusion:

Regular cleaning of your contact lens case is an essential step in maintaining healthy eyes. By incorporating these three cleaning methods, you can ensure your contact lens case is free from harmful contaminants, reducing the risk of infections. Remember to change your contact lens case at least every three months to maximize cleanliness and eye safety.
