3 Ways to Practice Parkour

Introduction:

Parkour, a discipline originating in France, blends movement, agility, and creativity into a thrilling and challenging physical activity. Perfecting parkour requires dedication and consistent practice, but with the right techniques and exercises, anyone can learn how to move fluidly, efficiently, and confidently through urban environments. In this article, we will explore three ways to practice parkour for beginners.

1. Basic Movements and Techniques:
Before diving headfirst into parkour, beginners should first learn the basic movements and techniques that form the foundation of this discipline. These include:

a) Running & Jumping: Get comfortable with running at different speeds and incorporating jumps into your runs. Focus on landing softly by using your legs to absorb the impact.

b) Vaulting: Practice vaulting over low obstacles like benches, railings, or walls. Start with the Safety Vault – placing one hand on the obstacle while swinging your opposite leg over the top – then progress to more advanced techniques such as the Kong Vault or Speed Vault.

c) Rolling: Learn how to perform a proper parkour roll to distribute impact forces evenly across your body when landing from jumps or dropping from heights. Begin by rolling on soft surfaces like grass, then slowly increase the height as you become more comfortable.

2. Conditioning and Strength Training:
In addition to perfecting fundamental techniques, it’s essential to build physical strength and conditioning specific to parkour movements. Incorporate these exercises into your training routine:

a) Quadrupedal Movement (QM): This exercise teaches balance and coordination by having you move around on all fours (hands and feet). Practice QM forward, backward, and side-to-side over various terrains such as stairs or uneven ground.

b) Wall Climbs: Develop upper body strength by climbing walls without footholds or handrails. Start with a low wall (around chest height) and progress to higher walls as you gain strength and confidence.

c) Precision Jumps: Improve your accuracy and body awareness by practicing jumping from one spot to another and landing precisely on a small target, often the edge of a raised surface. Start with short distances and gradually increase the difficulty of your jumps.

3. Explore Your Environment:

As parkour is all about creative movement through urban environments, find unique ways to incorporate obstacles in your surroundings into your practice sessions. Visit local parks, playgrounds or empty urban areas to experiment with different structures like benches, railings, walls, and staircases.

Always remember to ask for permission if practicing on private property, and respect your environment by not causing any damage during your practice sessions. As you progress, connect with other parkour enthusiasts in your area to share tips, spot new locations, and challenge each other’s skills.

Conclusion:

With the right mindset and consistent practice, any beginner can develop the necessary skills and techniques for parkour. By familiarizing yourself with basic movements, strengthening your body through targeted conditioning exercises, and incorporating your environment creatively, you’ll be well on your way to mastering this exciting discipline. Remember to prioritize safety throughout your training journey and have fun exploring new ways to move through the world around you.
