3 Ways to Prepare Hair for Relaxer

A relaxer is a popular hair treatment that helps to straighten curly or wavy hair by breaking down its protein structure. However, to ensure best results and avoid any damage to your hair, it is essential to prepare your hair properly prior to applying a relaxer. Here are three ways you can prepare your hair for a relaxer treatment.

1. Strengthen Your Hair with Protein Treatments

Before using a relaxer, it’s essential to fortify your hair with protein treatments. These treatments help to reinforce the hair’s protein structures that will be broken down by the relaxer. Opt for a high-quality protein treatment and follow the instructions on the package. Typically, you should start these treatments at least two weeks before your relaxer appointment.

Some examples of protein treatments include hydrolyzed protein-infused shampoos, deep conditioners, and leave-in protein sprays. Regularly incorporating these products into your hair care routine will help to ensure that your hair stays strong and flexible during the relaxer process.

2. Keep Your Hair Moisturized

Since relaxers can be drying, maintaining adequate moisture levels in your hair is vital before and after the relaxing process. A few weeks before your appointment, make sure to use hydrating deep-conditioning treatments and moisturizing oils regularly.

Natural oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or avocado oil can be applied as pre-shampoo treatments or combined with deep conditioners for added hydration. Avoid using alcohol-based hair products as they strip away much-needed moisture from the hair.

Additionally, consider incorporating a daily leave-in conditioner into your routine leading up to your appointment. This will provide continued hydration and help strengthen your hair strands.

3. Avoid Hair Manipulation Prior to Relaxer Application

To minimize any potential damage from the relaxing process, refrain from any chemical or thermal styling (like coloring or heat-styling) two weeks prior to your relaxer appointment. Avoid combing or brushing your hair harshly as well, since this can weaken the hair shaft.

One week before your relaxer appointment, do not wash or manipulate your hair. This will help to maintain the natural oils on your scalp, creating a barrier that offers some protection from the chemicals during the relaxer application.

In conclusion, by following these three steps—strengthening your hair with protein treatments, keeping it moisturized, and avoiding hair manipulation before the relaxer application—you can ensure that your hair is in the best possible condition for a successful and damage-free relaxer treatment. Healthy hair preparation is key to achieving beautiful, straightened locks with minimal damage and long-lasting results.
