Introduction:

The Old Fashioned is a timeless classic that has graced cocktail menus for centuries. A perfect blend of bourbon, sugar, bitters, and garnishes make this drink a sophisticated sipper with a rich history. Let’s dive into the best recipe for making a classic Old Fashioned cocktail, and the origins of this legendary libation.

History:

The first recorded mention of an Old Fashioned dates back to 1806 when it was referred to as “a potent concoction of spirits, bitters, water, and sugar.” Over the years, the drink has evolved to include various liquors and garnishes but at its core, it remains anchored by the same essential ingredients as its first incarnation.

Classic Old Fashioned Recipe:

Ingredients:

– 2 oz Bourbon or Rye whiskey

– 1 Sugar cube or ½ teaspoon granulated sugar

– 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters

– 1 Maraschino cherry

– 1 Orange peel

– Ice

Instructions:

1. In a mixing glass or old-fashioned glass, place the sugar cube or granulated sugar.

2. Add 2-3 dashes of Angostura bitters and a splash of water.

3. Muddle the sugar, bitters, and water until the sugar is dissolved.

4. If using a mixing glass, fill with ice before adding your choice of bourbon or rye whiskey. If you are using an old-fashioned glass, simply add ice directly to the mixture.

5. Stir gently until well combined and properly chilled.

6. Strain your cocktail into a new old-fashioned glass with fresh ice if using a mixing glass.

7. Express an orange peel over the drink by holding it above your glass and giving it a good twist, releasing its oils onto the surface of your cocktail. Discard or drop the orange peel into the glass.

8. Garnish with a maraschino cherry, and enjoy your classic Old Fashioned!

Conclusion:

The Old Fashioned is truly a cocktail that has weathered the test of time, and it’s no surprise that it remains a popular choice for cocktail enthusiasts and casual drinkers alike. Its rich history, paired with its fantastic flavor profile, make it a must-try for anyone looking to indulge in a classic adult beverage. So now you’re equipped with the best recipe, go on, and make yourself a splendid Old Fashioned – cheers!
