3 Ways to Turn Pants Into a Skirt

Transforming an old pair of pants into a stylish skirt is a fun and creative way to give your wardrobe a fresh, new look. By upcycling your clothing, you are not only saving money but also reducing waste. Here are three ways to turn your pants into a skirt:
1. The Sideways Skirt Method:
The sideways skirt method is perfect for wide-legged pants. To start, lay the pants flat on a work surface and cut the inseam from the bottom hemline up to the crotch. Next, cut along the side seams to create two separate fabric pieces.
Place one of the fabric pieces on top of the other with the right sides facing each other and pin the front and back panels together from waistband to hemline. Sew along this creative line and trim off any excess fabric of uneven edges. Turn your new skirt inside out, press the seams flat, and there you have it – a brand-new sideways skirt!
2. The A-Line Skirt Method:
This method works well with pants that have a wider waistband or more material around the hips. To create an A-line skirt, start by carefully cutting the seam that connects both legs from waistband to cuff. You should now have two separate pant legs.
Attach one pant leg to the other by sewing them together down their full length, from waistband to cuff. This forms one long piece of fabric with two ends connected at their original waistbands, creating an A shape.
Measure your desired skirt length, mark it on both sides of your fabric, and cut off any excess material from below this mark. Stitch a straight line across these cuts to secure your new hemline and prevent fraying. Finally, sew together any open edges at the waistband for a clean finish.
3. The Gathered Skirt Method:
A gathered skirt is ideal for loose-fitting pants with an elastic waistband. Begin by laying the pants flat, cutting off any pockets, zippers, or embellishments that may be in the way. Next, cut off the pant legs just below the crotch area.
Open up the pant legs by cutting along the side seams and place one on top of the other, ensuring they align perfectly. Sew these two layers together along both vertical sides to form a rectangular shape.
Measure your desired skirt length and fold your fabric in half widthwise to cut away any excess material. With your remaining fabric, sew a casing for an elastic waistband at the top and insert elastic through this casing before sewing it shut. At the bottom, create a clean hemline by folding over your fabric once or twice and sewing it in place.
With these three methods at hand, you can revolutionize your wardrobe and create unique, stylish skirts from unused or damaged pants. Happy upcycling!
