3 Ways to Get Rid of Corns

Corns are small, hardened patches of skin that form on your toes and the balls of your feet. They can be quite irritating and may cause pain or discomfort while walking, making it essential to address them with the right treatments. In this article, we will discuss three effective ways to get rid of corns.

1. Home remedies

Several home remedies can help you gradually soften and remove corns. These solutions work best for mild cases that do not cause severe pain or discomfort. Some effective home remedies include:

– Soaking your feet: Soak your feet in warm water mixed with Epsom salt for about 15-20 minutes daily. This will soften the skin and make it easier to exfoliate the affected area using a pumice stone or foot file.

– Applying moisturizers: Regularly apply a good-quality moisturizer containing ingredients like urea or salicylic acid directly on the corns. This will help soften them over time, making removal easier.

– Using protective pads: Place adhesive pads or moleskin around the corns to reduce pressure and friction while wearing shoes.

2. Over-the-counter treatments

There are several over-the-counter products available at pharmacies that can effectively treat corns. These treatments usually contain salicylic acid which breaks down the hard layers of skin:

– Creams and ointments: Apply creams and ointments containing salicylic acid directly on the corns daily for a set duration.

– Medicated patches: You can also apply medicated patches over the corns, containing a layer of salicylic acid to soften them gradually.

However, it is important to note that individuals with diabetes or circulation problems should consult their healthcare provider before using over-the-counter treatments.

3. Medical intervention

If home remedies or over-the-counter treatments do not provide relief, consider seeking medical help from a podiatrist. There are several medical interventions that they can provide to eliminate corns:

– Debridement: A podiatrist may use a scalpel to carefully trim the layers of dead skin on the corn, providing immediate relief from pressure and pain. This process is called debridement.

– Custom orthotics: In some cases, corns may form due to an issue with your foot structure or posture. Custom orthotics can help correct these issues and prevent future corn formation.

– Surgery: In rare cases, if the underlying cause of a corn is a bone deformity (like a bunion or hammertoe), surgery may be required to eliminate the problem.

In conclusion, home remedies, over-the-counter treatments, and medical intervention are three viable options for dealing with corns on your feet. Remember that prevention is the best cure; wear well-fitted shoes and reduce pressure on your feet to minimize your chances of developing corns in the first place.
