5 Ways to Clean Plaster Walls

A well-maintained home not only reflects its occupants’ tidiness but also protects various surfaces from wear and tear. Plaster walls, in particular, can accumulate dirt, grime, and dust over time, causing them to lose their original luster. With the right methods and some elbow grease, you can restore your plaster walls to their former glory.

Here are five ways to clean plaster walls and keep them looking fresh:

1. Regular Dusting

The simplest way to clean plaster walls is by regularly dusting them. This prevents the build-up of dirt and debris that can dull their appearance. Use a microfiber or electrostatic cloth to gently collect dust without damaging the surface of the wall. To reach high or tricky spots, opt for an extendable duster or attach the cloth to a mop handle.

2. Vacuuming

While dusting is ideal for everyday cleaning, vacuuming helps get rid of accumulated dirt more effectively. Use the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner and gently run it across the entire surface of the wall. Pay special attention to corners, molding details, and cornices as they tend to gather more dirt.

3. Damp Wiping

To remove light stains or marks from your plaster walls, damp wiping is an excellent technique. Mix a few drops of mild dish soap with warm water in a bucket or large bowl and dampen a soft cloth or sponge with the solution. Wring out excess water before carefully wiping down soiled areas until the marks disappear. Make sure never to use harsh chemicals or scrubbing materials as they might damage the plaster.

4. Using a Magic Eraser

Magic erasers are great for tackling stubborn stains that don’t respond to basic cleaning methods. These versatile sponges contain tiny micro-abrasive particles that gently lift away grime when rubbed over dirty surfaces. Wet the eraser slightly and lightly rub the stained area, taking care not to put too much pressure on the wall. Rinse and wring out the eraser frequently as you work.

5. Patching Damaged Areas

Plaster walls are prone to minor chipping or cracking over time. Cleaning these areas can be challenging, but repairing them is relatively simple. Examine your walls for damages before you begin cleaning and patch them up using a premixed plaster patch or a combination of plaster of Paris and water. Apply the mixture to any damaged spots with a putty knife, let it dry, and then sand the surface down for a smooth finish.

In conclusion, taking care of your plaster walls is vital in maintaining their appearance. With regular dusting, vacuuming, damp wiping, magic erasers, and patching up damaged areas when needed, you can ensure that your walls always look their best. Good housekeeping practices will not only keep your home looking spotless but also help preserve and protect surfaces like plaster for years to come.
