3 Ways to Eliminate Cat Odors Around the House

Having pets at home can be extremely joyful and rewarding. But when it comes to lingering pet odors, things are not as pleasant. Cat owners, in particular, often struggle to keep their household smelling fresh and clean due to litter boxes and territorial marking. Fear not, we’ve got three effective ways to help you eliminate cat odors around the house.

1. Maintain a Clean Litter Box

The most common source of cat odor is an unclean litter box. Keeping the litter box clean and well-maintained is crucial for controlling unpleasant smells. Make sure to scoop out waste daily and change your cat’s litter at least once a week, depending on the type of litter you use. Washing the litter box with mild soap and water every time you change the litter can make a difference too.

Consider using an odor-absorbing type of cat litter that more effectively traps smells or using baking soda at the bottom of your litter tray before adding the main layer of cat litter.

2. Regularly Clean Your Home

Thoroughly cleaning your home helps minimize and prevent lingering cat odors. Vacuuming carpets, rugs, and upholstery weekly removes cat hair and potential odor sources. Pay extra attention to areas where your cat spends most of its time, as these places are more likely to collect dirt and hair.

In addition, don’t forget to wash your pet’s bedding regularly as it can also absorb urine smells or other odors over time. Just pop it in the washing machine with a mild detergent.

3. Use Enzymatic Cleaners

When cats mark their territory through spraying or dribble urine accidentally onto surfaces like flooring or furniture, regular cleaning sprays may not be sufficient in addressing the problem entirely. In this case, enzymatic cleaners can help break down protein-based stains and neutralize cat urine odor.

To leverage off their effective cleansing powers, spray the affected area with the enzymatic cleaner, and then blot the area to remove excess moisture. Allow the enzymatic cleaner to sit for a few hours to let it work before gently dabbing it up or washing it away.

When fighting cat odors, persistence and consistency are essential. By keeping a clean litter box, regularly cleaning your home, and using enzymatic cleaners, you’re on track toward enjoying a fresher home environment that both you and your furry friend can appreciate.
