How to Calculate Amazon FBA Fees: A Comprehensive Guide

As an Amazon seller, understanding and calculating your Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) fees is crucial to maximizing profits and successfully scaling your business. In this article, we will explain what FBA fees are, discuss the different charges, and help you determine how to calculate Amazon FBA fees for your products.

What are Amazon FBA Fees?

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA) is a service provided by Amazon that allows sellers to store their products in the company’s warehouses. When a customer places an order for the seller’s product, Amazon picks, packs, and ships it on their behalf. Additionally, Amazon handles customer service and returns management for FBA transactions. In exchange for these services, sellers pay different types of fees.

Types of FBA Fees

1. Fulfillment Fees: These fees cover the costs of picking, packing, and shipping your products, as well as handling customer service and returns. Fulfillment fees depend on the dimensions and weight of your items.

2. Storage Fees: With FBA, you store your products at Amazon’s warehouses, so you need to pay storage fees calculated based on the amount of space your inventory occupies.

3. Referral Fees: When using FBA services, sellers pay a referral fee that is a percentage of their product’s sale price. This fee varies by category but is typically between 6% and 45% of the item price.

Calculating FBA Fees

Step 1: Measure Your Product

Determine the weight and dimensions of your product when packed for shipping. Be sure to include all packaging materials — such as boxes or mailers — in the measurement.

Step 2: Identify Your Product’s Category

Amazon divides its products into different categories with unique fee structures outlined in its Fee Schedule. Determine which category best fits your product to find the appropriate referral fee percentage.

Step 3: Calculate Fulfillment Fees

Use Amazon’s FBA Revenue Calculator or the FBA Fee Calculator to easily calculate your fulfillment fees. Just enter your product’s weight, dimensions, and selling price, and the calculator will provide an estimate of your fees.

Step 4: Calculate Storage Fees

Storage fees are based on the volume of space your inventory occupies in Amazon’s warehouses. To calculate the monthly storage fee, multiply the product’s volume (in cubic feet) by the current rate per cubic foot.

Step 5: Calculate Referral Fees

Referral fees are calculated as a percentage of your product’s sale price. Multiply your product’s selling price by the applicable referral fee percentage for your specific category to find this value.

Step 6: Add up All Fees

Combine fulfillment fees, storage fees, and referral fees to determine the total Amazon FBA fees associated with selling your product.
