Parboiled rice, also known as converted rice, is partially cooked rice that has been soaked, steamed, and dried. This process helps retain more nutrients and yields a fluffier texture when cooked. Moreover, parboiled rice takes less time and effort to cook compared to other types of rice, making it a great choice when looking for versatility in the kitchen. In this article, we’ll explore four different ways to cook parboiled rice.

1. Stovetop Method

The stovetop method is the most traditional way of cooking parboiled rice:

a) Rinse the rice in a strainer under cold running water.

b) In a saucepan, combine two cups of water for every one cup of parboiled rice.

c) Add a pinch of salt if desired and bring the water to a boil.

d) Add the rinsed rice to the boiling water, stir once, then cover and reduce heat to low.

e) Allow the rice to simmer for 20 minutes or until all water is absorbed.

f) Remove from heat and let it sit (covered) for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.

2. Rice Cooker Method

Cooking parboiled rice in a rice cooker allows for even cooking and easy clean-up:

a) Rinse the rice in a strainer under cold water.

b) Add the rinsed rice and water to your rice cooker using a 2:1 ratio (water:rice).

c) If you prefer, add salt as per taste.

d) Turn on your cooker and follow its instructions. Most cookers switch off or shift to ‘warm’ mode once done.

e) Allow the cooked rice to sit for 5-10 minutes before fluffing with a fork.

3. Microwave Method

Ideal for those short on time, parboiled rice can be cooked quickly in a microwave:

a) In a microwave-safe bowl, rinse the rice with cold water.

b) Add 2 cups of water for every one cup of rice. Add salt to taste if you like.

c) Place a lid or microwave-safe plate on the bowl and microwave on high for 5 minutes.

d) After 5 minutes, reduce the power to 50% and cook for an additional 15 minutes.

e) Carefully remove the bowl from the microwave (it will be hot!) and let it sit for 5 minutes before fluffing the rice with a fork.

4. Oven Method

Baking parboiled rice in the oven offers even heat distribution:

a) Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

b) Rinse rice under cold water in a strainer.

c) In an oven-safe dish, combine two cups of water per one cup of rice. Add salt as necessary.

d) Stir in rinsed rice and cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil.

e) Bake in preheated oven for 25-30 minutes or until all water is absorbed.

f) Remove from the oven and allow it to rest for 5 minutes before fluffing with a fork.

In conclusion, these four methods provide efficient ways to cook parboiled rice. Holding onto more nutrients while delivering robust, fluffy textures, parboiled rice adds versatility to your culinary repertoire. Whichever method you choose, do enjoy the convenience and flavor of perfectly cooked parboiled rice.
