How to Install Pavers: 15 Steps

Step 1: Design the layout

Before you begin the installation of your pavers, it’s essential to plan out how they will be arranged. Measure the area you want to pave and sketch out a design on paper, bearing in mind the dimensions of the paver stones you’ll be using.

Step 2: Prep the ground

Once your layout is finalized, clear the area of debris and any plants or grass that will be in the way. This will ensure a stable foundation for your pavers.

Step 3: Dig out the area

To accommodate both gravel and sand layers beneath your pavers, dig approximately six to eight inches deep, leveling out the bottom with a rake or shovel.

Step 4: Mark levels

Determine a slope runoff for water to drain away from buildings by marking lines on wooden stakes around the perimeter and using string to mark levels.

Step 5: Lay down landscaping fabric

Put down landscaping fabric as the first layer to prevent weeds from growing through your pavers.

Step 6: Add crushed gravel

Add about four inches of crushed gravel, then compact it using a plate compactor or hand tamper. This provides a solid base for your pavers.

Step 7: Ensure proper slope

Check your slope again using a level to ensure proper drainage.

Step 8: Install edge restraints

Place plastic or metal edge restraints around the perimeter of the project area, securing them with landscape spikes.

Step 9: Spread bedding sand

Add one inch of bedding sand evenly over gravel base. Use a straight edge or board to level it off.

Step 10: Begin laying pavers

Starting at one corner and following your pattern design, settle each paver firmly into the sand bed by pressing it down and slightly wiggling. Leave small gaps between each for later filling with joint sand.

Step 11: Keep an eye on level and placement

Use a level, tape measure, or string line to ensure that your pavers are aligned correctly as you progress with your layout.

Step 12: Make necessary cuts

For areas where full-size pavers cannot fit, use a circular saw, tile saw, or masonry saw to cut your pavers to the desired size.

Step 13: Fill gaps with joint sand

Spread polymeric joint sand or regular sand over the surface and sweep it into the gaps between the pavers. Tap down on them gently with a rubber mallet to help settle the sand in place.

Step 14: Compact the pavers

Run a plate compactor over the entire surface of your patio or walkway to help lock the pavers into place. Make sure to add more joint sand if necessary.

Step 15: Clean up

Clear away any leftover tools and materials from the project area. Sweep off any excess sand from your newly installed pavers, and enjoy your new patio or walkway!
