The Sennheiser MKE 400 is a compact shotgun microphone designed for vloggers, content creators, and filmmakers seeking an easy-to-use and high-quality microphone solution. In this Sennheiser MKE 400 review, we will explore its features, performance, and overall value.

Design

The Sennheiser MKE 400 is a small compact shotgun microphone, measuring only 5 inches in length and weighing a mere 93 grams with the battery installed. It features a rugged all-metal housing that can easily withstand the rigors of on-location shooting.

Performance

Equipped with a super-cardioid polar pattern, the MKE 400 effectively isolates the sound from your subject while minimizing background noise. This makes it suitable for recording interviews, vlogs, or on-location audio in noisy environments.

It boasts a frequency response of 40 Hz to 20 kHz, ensuring that the audio recorded is clear and accurate. Additionally, the built-in shock mount helps to minimize handling noise and vibrations when mounted on cameras or tripods.

Ease of Use

The MKE 400 does not require any additional equipment or software to operate. Simply plug it into your camera or recorder’s 3.5mm microphone jack and use the built-in sliding power switch to turn it on. Two sensitivity settings are available – one for loud environments such as concerts or sports events, and another for quieter situations like interviews or dialogue scenes.

Battery Life

Powered by a single AAA battery, the MKE 400 has an impressive battery life of up to 300 hours. This makes it ideal for prolonged use during shoots without needing constant battery replacements.

Wind Protection

The MKE 400 comes with a foam windscreen which helps reduce light wind noise. However, if you plan on using this microphone outdoors in strong winds, it is recommended to invest in an additional furry windshield for optimum wind protection.

Price

Falling on the more affordable side of shotgun microphones, the Sennheiser MKE 400 offers an excellent balance of quality and value. Considering its performance and capabilities, it is well-suited for both amateurs and professionals on a budget.

Conclusion

In this Sennheiser MKE 400 review, we have explored its features, design, and performance. While there are certainly more advanced shotgun microphones available for higher budgets, the MKE 400 is a versatile and reliable option for content creators seeking a compact and easy-to-use microphone. Its audio quality, robust construction, and long battery life make it an excellent choice for those looking to improve their audio recording capabilities without breaking the bank.
