Introduction:

The year 1326 was a tumultuous period in world history, marked by significant political, social, and cultural events. It is remembered for various milestones that shaped the course of history for several countries. Let’s take a look at some of the significant happenings that occurred during this year.

1. The Deposition of Edward II:

One of the most notable events in English history took place in 1326, when Queen Isabella of France and her lover, Roger Mortimer, successfully deposed King Edward II. Their invasion of England led to the capture and imprisonment of Edward, eventually resulting in his untimely death the following year.

2. The Marriage of Louis IV and Margaret Maultasch:

In a controversial move during 1326, Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV (often known as Louis the Bavarian) married Margaret Maultasch (Margaret of Tyrol), cementing their alliance against the Pope. Margaret was already betrothed and married to John Henry of Bohemia, but Louis used his imperial powers to annul her marriage.

3. The Treaty of Novgorod:

Hailing from Sweden, Prince Yury of Moscow formed an alliance with Grand Duke Gediminas from Lithuania against Sweden by signing the Treaty of Novgorod in July 1326. This agreement signified a decisive turn in diplomatic relations between Lithuania and Russia that had repercussions across Europe.

4. The Battle of Oldendorf:

The Battle of Oldendorf occurred when Danish forces attacked Count Otto II’s Oldendorf fortress in 1326 during the Count’s feuds with Danish nobility. The siege ultimately led to Otto’s defeat and capture by Danish forces. This battle further destabilized northern Germany during this turbulent time.

5. The Foundation of Vijayanagara Empire:

In 1326, Harihara I and Bukka Raya I of the Sangama dynasty established the Vijayanagara Empire in southern India. This powerful and influential empire lasted for more than 200 years and profoundly impacted the cultural, social, and political landscape in South India.

Conclusion:

The year 1326 was a vital historical period marked by significant events that shaped the future of
various nations. From the deposition of an English king to the formation of alliances, battles, and new empires, this year undoubtedly left its mark on history as one to remember.
