What Is a Deep Link? How Does a Deep Link Work?

In today’s digital age, the concept of deep links has become increasingly significant. A deep link refers to a link that directs users to a specific page on an app or website, bypassing the home page or other intermediary pages. Deep linking is a crucial aspect of web development and marketing as it allows users to access relevant content instantly and enhances user experience.

Deep links are different from regular links in that they contain additional information that identifies a specific page within the website or app. A deep link contains a Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) that defines the content and location of the linked resource. For example, a deep link for a specific product on an e-commerce website would look something like this- https://www.example.com/product/iphone12.

Deep links can be used in several ways. For instance, apps can use deep links to direct users to a specific section within the app or to open up a particular page in the app instead of directing them to the app’s homepage. This not only makes it convenient for users to navigate but also enhances the user experience, increasing the likelihood of engagement and conversion.

Deep links can also be used for marketing purposes. When a user clicks on a deep link, they are directed to a specific page, opening up opportunities for businesses to track user behavior and target them with relevant ads. This not only makes it easier for businesses to measure the success of their marketing campaigns but also enables them to offer personalized experiences for users.

In terms of how they work, deep links require a URI scheme that defines how the app or website interprets the link. When the user clicks on the deep link, the URI scheme tells the device that it needs to open the linked content within the app instead of on the web. The app then recognizes the specific URI and directs the user to the corresponding page.
