7 Ways to Remove Oil Stains With Baking Soda

Introduction

Oil stains can be a nightmare, whether it’s on your clothes, driveway, or any other surface. However, the solution might be sitting right in your kitchen cabinet: baking soda! This common household ingredient is an inexpensive and eco-friendly way to remove oil stains. Let’s dive into the 7 ways you can use baking soda to tackle those stubborn oil stains.

1. Baking Soda and Water Paste

Mix equal parts baking soda and water to form a thick paste. Apply the paste directly onto the oil stain, ensuring that it covers the entire affected area. Allow it to sit for at least 30 minutes, allowing the baking soda to absorb the oil. Gently scrub with a brush, and then rinse with water.

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar Solution

Combine two parts baking soda with one part vinegar to create a foamy mixture. Apply this solution to the oil stain and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. The bubbling action of the vinegar will help break down the oil while the baking soda absorbs it. Scrub with a brush and then rinse with water.

3. Baking Soda and Dish Soap

Mix equal parts of baking soda and dish soap, preferably a grease-cutting formula. Apply the mixture to the oil stain and let it sit for 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the severity of the stain. Gently scrub with a brush and rinse thoroughly with water.

4. Baking Soda Sprinkle

For fresh oil stains on fabrics or carpets, simply sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda onto the affected area. Allow it to sit for 30-60 minutes as it absorbs the oil. Vacuum or brush off the excess baking soda when you are done.

5. Baking Soda Steam Cleaning

For large or deep-set oil stains on carpets or upholstery, use a steam cleaner filled with water and add a few tablespoons of baking soda to the mix. The heat from the steam will help the baking soda penetrate the stain, breaking it down and lifting it out.

6. Baking Soda Laundry Booster

If dealing with an oil stain on clothing, add a half cup of baking soda to your regular laundry detergent and wash as usual. The baking soda will help remove any lingering oil residue, leaving your clothes clean and fresh.

7. Baking Soda and Lemon Juice

Mix two parts baking soda with one part lemon juice to form a thick paste. Apply this paste to the oil stain on any hard surface, such as concrete or tile, and let it sit for 15-20 minutes. The lemon juice acts as a natural degreaser, while the baking soda absorbs the oil. Rinse thoroughly with water.

Conclusion

Baking soda is a versatile and powerful cleaning agent that can easily tackle even the most stubborn oil stains. By utilizing these 7 methods, you can save time, money, and reduce your environmental impact by avoiding harsh chemical cleaners.
