7 of the Best Distros Based on Fedora Linux

Fedora Linux, known for its cutting-edge technology and driving force in the open-source community, serves as the upstream source of the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux distribution. It’s a powerful and stable operating system beloved by developers and enthusiasts alike. However, Fedora doesn’t end with its own distro; it’s the foundation of several other distributions, each offering unique twists and tools to cater to different user preferences and needs. Here are seven of the best distros based on Fedora Linux:

1.CentOS Stream

CentOS Stream is a rolling-release distribution that positions itself between Fedora and RHEL. It is considered a preview of what’s to come in RHEL, giving users early access to features that will eventually make their way into the enterprise version. CentOS Stream is ideal for those who wish to contribute to a distro that impacts enterprise environments while maintaining stability.

2.Korora

Originally based on Gentoo, Korora was reborn as a Fedora derivative with an aim to make Linux easier for new users by providing a complete, easy-to-use system out of the box. While Korora is currently on hiatus, it historically offered additional user-friendly features and media codecs pre-installed, saving time during initial setup.

4.RPM Fusion

While not a distinct distro itself, RPM Fusion is an essential repository for Fedora users seeking software not included in the official repositories due to licensing or other policies. It provides an array of additional packages that can be seamlessly integrated within any Fedora-based system.

5.Fedora Spins

For users preferring different desktop environments over the default GNOME that comes with standard Fedora Workstation, Fedora Spins offer pre-packaged ISOs with KDE Plasma, XFCE, LXQT, Mate-Compiz, Cinnamon, and SOAS (Sugar on a Stick) among others.

6.Fedora Labs

Fedora Labs are curated sets of purpose-driven software and content tailored for specific interests like astronomy, games, music composition or security. Each lab serves as ready-to-use bundles making it convenient for enthusiasts in those areas to get started without having to hunt down and install software piece by piece.

7.Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL)

RHEL might not be literally based on Fedora but shares much of its DNA with its community counterpart. It’s built more conservatively than Fedora to prioritize stability and long-term support for enterprise clients.

8.Qubes OS

While Qubes OS is technically built upon Xen hypervisor technology for increased security through hardware virtualization and compartmentalization, it utilizes Fedora extensively within its virtual machines (VM). As such, those familiar with Fedora will find themselves at home in Qubes OS VMs.

Each distro presents unique offerings springing from the foundation set by Fedora. From higher-level distros like CentOS Stream that offer sneak peeks into Red Hat’s developments to task-specific solutions like Fedora Labs – users have a plethora of choices depending on their needs and preferences in their computing environment.
