5 Ways to Splint Trigger Finger

Trigger finger, also known as stenosing tenosynovitis, is a painful condition affecting the tendons in the finger or thumb. It can cause stiffness, pain, and the sensation of catching or locking when attempting to bend or straighten the affected digit. One of the most effective ways to alleviate symptoms and promote healing is through splinting. In this article, we will explore five different methods for splinting trigger finger.

1. Oval-8 Finger Splints

Oval-8 finger splints are a popular choice for treating trigger finger due to their ease of use and adjustability. This type of splint works by holding the affected finger in a straight position, preventing it from bending and allowing the tendon to heal. Oval-8 splints come in various sizes and can be easily adjusted to ensure a comfortable fit.

2. Aluminum Foam Finger Splints

Aluminum foam splints involve an aluminum core surrounded by soft foam padding. These splints are lightweight and can be molded easily to fit your finger’s shape, providing both support and comfort. By keeping the affected finger immobilized with an aluminum foam splint, you can reduce inflammation and minimize pain.

3. Buddy Taping

Buddy taping is a simple yet effective method for splinting trigger finger at home. To buddy tape your injured finger, simply wrap medical tape around it and an adjacent healthy finger to provide support and restrict movement. This method allows for some joint flexibility while keeping your injured finger straight enough to reduce irritation.

4. Custom Thermoplastic Splints

Custom thermoplastic splints are designed specifically for your individual needs by healthcare professionals. These advanced splints target the affected area precisely, providing optimal support and immobilization throughout the healing process. While custom thermoplastic splints may be more expensive than other options, their tailored design ensures maximum comfort and effectiveness.

5. Soft Fabric Finger Sleeves

For those seeking a less rigid form of support, soft fabric finger sleeves may be an appropriate option. These elasticized sleeves comfortably fit around the affected finger, providing warmth and compression while still allowing for limited movement. Although soft fabric finger sleeves may not provide as much immobilization as other methods, they can still help alleviate symptoms and prevent further injury.

In conclusion, several different methods exist to splint trigger finger effectively. Depending on your individual needs and preferences, you might choose a more rigid splint or a flexible solution like buddy taping or soft fabric finger sleeves. Always consult with a healthcare professional before attempting any treatment to ensure you are utilizing the most suitable option for your specific situation. With the right splinting method and proper care, you’ll be on your way to recovery in no time.
