Adobe InDesign, an industry-standard software used by designers, offers numerous features for creating stunning layouts for print and digital publications. One such feature is text wrapping, which enables you to create a visually engaging layout by flowing text around images, illustrations, or other content. In this article, we will explore four different ways to wrap text in InDesign.

1. Wrap Text Around Rectangular Bounding Box

The simplest method of text wrapping in InDesign is to wrap the text around an object’s rectangular bounding box. To do this:

1.1. Select the object you would like the text to flow around.

1.2. Go to Window > Text Wrap and open the Text Wrap panel.

1.3. Select the first icon, “Wrap around bounding box.”

1.4. Adjust the offset value to control the space between the object and surrounding text.

2. Wrap Text Around Object Shape

To create more responsive design layouts, wrap your text around the actual shape of your object instead of its bounding box.

2.1. Select the object you want to wrap your text around.

2.2. Open the Text Wrap panel (Window > Text Wrap).

2.3. Click on the second icon, “Wrap around object shape.”

2.4. Adjust the contour options and offset values for more precise control over your layout.

3. Inset Spacing

To apply spacing within irregular or multi-part shapes while keeping a consistent distance between objects and text, use inset spacing:

3.1. Select an irregular or multi-part shape.

3.2. Navigate to Window > Text Frame Options.

3.3. Choose “Inset Spacing” from the popup menu.

3.4 Adjust “Top”, “Bottom”, “Left”, and “Right” values individually or together as desired (making sure to select “Preview” so you can see changes in real-time).

4. Text Wrap with Anchored Objects

If you want to insert an object, such as an image or illustration, within the text frame to wrap the text around it, follow these steps:

4.1. Place your object within the text frame.

4.2. Select the object and then go to Object > Anchored Object > Insert.

4.3. Choose your desired options in the Anchored Object Options dialog box, such as the position of the object relative to the text.

4.4. Apply text wrap settings (via Window > Text Wrap) to create a clean design by wrapping the text around your anchored objects.

In summary, Adobe InDesign provides multiple options for wrapping text around different shapes and objects, enabling designers to create visually appealing layouts with ease. By mastering these four methods, you can enhance both print and digital designs with better readability and aesthetic appeal.
