4 Ways to Look Like a Writer

Every writer has their own unique style. As the old saying goes, “You can’t judge a book by its cover” – but you can certainly try your best to look the part of a writer! Here are four ways to help you achieve that irresistible air of literary genius.

1. Dress the Part

Writers are known for their often bohemian and intellectual style. While it’s important to be comfortable in your own skin, embracing certain fashion staples can enhance your writerly appearance.

– Opt for timeless pieces like blazers, turtleneck sweaters, and dark denim. These items give off an air of thoughtfulness and sophistication.

– Accessorize with scarves or glasses, which can add a touch of academia to your outfit.

– Don’t shy away from unique clothing items such as vintage coats, hats, or patterned socks. Expressing your individuality is essential for capturing that writer’s spirit.

2. Carry Your Writing Tools

As a writer, you should always be prepared for that spark of inspiration. Carrying around your writing tools not only makes you ready for those moments but also conveys your dedication to the craft.

– Notebooks are the classic choice; consider selecting one with a beautiful cover or design that reflects your personality.

– Alternatively, tablets or laptops are perfect options for those who prefer digital note-taking.

– Pens are just as important; try using a fountain pen or a quality rollerball pen to show off your passion for the written word.

3. Showcase Literary Knowledge

Embodying the look of a writer goes beyond just the physical; it’s about showcasing your love for literature as well. Engage in conversations about books, articles, and writing techniques with both fellow writers and non-writers.

– Stay up-to-date on recent book releases and literary prize winners.

– Participate in book clubs and attend literary events like readings, workshops, and panel discussions.

– Share your writing with friends and family or post it on a blog or social media. This will associate you with writing talent and create a sense of authority in your field.

4. Cultivate a Thoughtful Demeanor

Writers are often perceived as introspective and thoughtful individuals. Reflecting these traits in your behavior can contribute to your writerly persona.

– Practice deep listening during conversations, giving others your full attention and responding with insightful comments.

– Cultivate your observational skills to notice details that might inspire your writing or spark captivating conversations.

– Pause before speaking to carefully consider your words. Thoughtful speech can foster a reputation as a contemplative and creative writer.

By adopting these four tips, you can not only look like a writer but also immerse yourself more fully in the world of literature. In time, others will come to see you just as you wish: as an accomplished and passionate writer.
