4 Ways to Identify Platinum and Silver Jewelry

Whether you have an inherited piece of jewelry or have purchased a new one, it is important to know whether you have the real deal in terms of platinum and silver jewelry. Both precious metals have their unique characteristics and are highly sought after. Here are four ways to help you identify platinum and silver jewelry with ease.

1. Visual Examination

One of the initial ways to distinguish between platinum and silver jewelry is through a simple visual examination. Platinum has a more muted white color, whereas silver has a brighter, shinier appearance. If your piece reflects light very well and has a mirror-like finish, it is more likely to be silver.

2. Inspect the Hallmarks

Look for hallmarks on your jewelry; most precious metal items are stamped with numerical marks indicating their purity. Platinum items usually feature “PLAT,” “PT,” or “950” hallmarks, while silver will generally be marked with “STER,” “925,” or “SSI.” These markings may be tiny, so make use of a magnifying glass if needed.

3. Weight Comparison

Another way to identify between platinum and silver is by comparing their weights. As platinum has a higher density compared to silver, it will usually weigh more than an equally-sized chunk of silver. For instance, if you have two identical rings in terms of size and appearance but one feels significantly heavier than the other, it’s likely that the weightier ring is made from platinum.

4. Chemical Tests

Lastly, chemical testing can provide you with conclusive evidence of your jewelry’s metal content. For instance, applying nitric acid to a sample portion of both metals will cause silver to turn green; however, platinum will remain unaffected. Because chemical tests can cause damage to the jewelry, consider consulting with a professional jeweler before attempting any chemicals on your cherished pieces.

In conclusion, identifying your prized possessions as silver or platinum may take some investigating. Through visual examination, hallmark inspection, weight comparison, and chemical testing, you can authenticate your jewelry’s contents with confidence. Always remember to consult a professional for reliable validation and enjoy your authentic silver or platinum jewelry.
