4 Ways to Grate Cheese

Cheese lovers unite! One of the most satisfying and versatile ingredients in our kitchens, cheese can elevate any dish, from pastas to appetizers, soups to salads. An essential part of using cheese in recipes is grating it. With various tools and techniques at your disposal, let’s explore four ways to grate cheese like a pro.

1. Box Grater

A staple in many kitchens, the box grater is a handy tool with multiple functions. Boasting four sides, each with different sizes and shapes of holes for grating and shredding, the box grater can handle cheese of varying degrees of hardness. Hold your box grater securely on a cutting board or countertop and push the cheese firmly down against the angled holes while moving it up and down. This will produce long, thin shreds perfect for melting or sprinkling on top of dishes.

2. Rotary Grater

Preferred by some for its safety and ease, a rotary grater is a cylindrical device featuring a rotating handle attached to a small drum with holes for grating. Simply place cheese into the small compartment, put pressure on the handle while turning it clockwise, and watch as finely grated cheese comes out through the holes. The rotary grater works best with harder cheeses like Parmesan but can be used with medium-hard cheeses if chilled beforehand.

3. Microplane Grater

A relatively recent addition to kitchen arsenals, the microplane grater is a long tool similar to a rasp that features many tiny, sharp teeth. Hold the grater at an angle against your cutting board or counter while holding your block of cheese at a 45-degree angle against the teeth. Run the cheese downward against these razor-sharp tools for delicate shards of cheese perfect for salads or light garnishes. The microplane grater works best with semi-hard to hard cheeses.

4. Food Processor

If you’re looking to grate a large amount of cheese quickly, a food processor might be the way to go. With a grating attachment, your food processor can reduce blocks of cheese to perfectly grated piles in mere seconds. Cut your cheese into manageable chunks, place them in the feeding tube, and let the processor do the work for you. Food processors are versatile and work well with semi-soft to hard cheeses but avoid using them with soft, creamy cheeses as they could become clumped and unappealing.

Experiment with these four methods for grating cheese to find your favorite and elevate your cooking skills. Whether you’re garnishing a salad, melting cheese for a gooey casserole, or adding that perfect touch of Parmesan to pasta night, these grating techniques will help you achieve your culinary goals with ease and delicious results.
