Altar linens serve as a symbol of reverence and respect for the sacred elements used in religious ceremonies. They are an essential part of any place of worship and should be treated with utmost care. In this article, we will discuss four different ways to fold altar linens, ensuring that they are well-preserved and ready for use.

1. The Purificator Fold

The purificator is a small linen cloth used to cleanse sacred vessels during the Eucharist. It is important that the purificator is folded neatly to maintain its cleanliness and sanctity.

Step 1:

Lay the purificator flat on a clean surface with the embroidered cross facing up.

Step 2:

Fold the top third of the cloth down toward the center, keeping the edges in line.

Step 3:

Fold the bottom third upward, overlapping with the first fold.

Step 4:

Finally, fold it in half from left to right, enclosing the cross within and creating a neat, even rectangle.

2. The Corporal Fold

The corporal is a larger linen cloth placed beneath sacred vessels during mass. It must be folded carefully to avoid wrinkles and ensure proper placement on the altar.

Step 1:

Lay the corporal flat on a clean surface with all four corners pointing outwards, like a diamond shape.

Step 2:

Fold the corner closest to you up towards the center of the cloth.

Step 3:

Afterward, fold both side corners in towards the center, forming an envelope shape.Step 4:

Lastly, fold down the top corner to complete the envelope shape.

3. The Lavabo Towel Fold

The lavabo towel is used by clergy members to dry their hands during mass. It should be folded neatly for easy access and use.

Step 1:

Lay out your lavabo towel on a clean surface with any design or embroidery facing down.

Step 2:

Fold one-third of the length toward the center, making sure edges are aligned.

Step 3:

Fold the remaining third over the first fold, creating a neatly stacked rectangle.

4. The Chalice Veil Fold

The chalice veil is a decorative cloth that covers the sacred chalice and paten during mass. Folding it correctly helps maintain its pristine appearance and displays it beautifully on the altar.

Step 1:

Lay out your chalice veil flat on a clean surface with any embroidery or design facing up.

Step 2:

Fold in half, bringing the top edge down towards the bottom edge.

Step 3:

Fold it again in half from left to right, forming a perfectly squared shape.

In conclusion, knowing how to fold altar linens properly not only ensures their cleanliness and preservation but also reflects respect and reverence for religious ceremonies. Whether you’re an altar server or simply maintaining your church’s vestments, mastering these folding techniques will help uphold the sanctity and beauty of your place of worship.
