4 Ways to Cook Turkey Drumsticks

Introduction:

Turkey drumsticks are a delicious and satisfying option for anyone who enjoys flavorful, tender meat. Cooking drumsticks can be an intimidating task, but with a clear approach and a little bit of practice, you’ll have no problem making a meal that will leave your family and friends begging for seconds. Here we explore four different ways to prepare turkey drumsticks for your next dinner party or holiday meal.

1. Baking

Baking is a popular and easy method of cooking turkey drumsticks. For this technique, begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place the drumsticks in a baking dish and add your choice of seasonings, such as garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, or any other favorite spices. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). Remove the foil during the last 30 minutes to brown and crisp the skin.

2. Grilling

Grilling is an excellent way to cook turkey drumsticks, infusing them with a delicious smoky flavor. Begin by preheating your grill to medium heat. Marinate or rub the drumsticks with your preferred seasonings like barbecue sauce or a mix of herbs and spices. Place the drumsticks on the grate and cook over indirect heat for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, or until they reach an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C). Remember to turn them frequently for even cooking.

3. Slow Cooking

Slow cooking is an easy hands-off method that results in tender, juicy turkey drumsticks. Simply place your seasoned drumsticks into a slow cooker and add enough liquid (such as chicken broth) to cover about halfway up the sides of the drumsticks. Cook on low for about 6-8 hours, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C). For a thicker sauce, mix together some cornstarch and cold water, then stir it into the liquid during the last hour of cooking.

4. Braising

Braising involves both searing the drumsticks followed by slow baking or simmering in liquid. Begin by heating a small amount of oil in a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add your seasoned drumsticks and brown on all sides, which should take about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Once the drumsticks are browned, add liquid (such as broth, wine, or a combination) to the skillet until they are halfway submerged. Cover with a tight-fitting lid or aluminum foil and bake for 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, or until an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) is reached.

Conclusion:

Whichever method you choose when cooking turkey drumsticks – whether it be baking, grilling, slow cooking, or braising – be sure to monitor internal temperatures to ensure that you’re serving a safe and delicious meal. With these four techniques in your arsenal, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a turkey drumstick master!
