4 Ways to Clean a Bathtub Drain

A clogged bathtub drain can be frustrating, leading to slow drainage and standing water in your tub. But fear not! There are several effective ways to clean a bathtub drain and restore normal water flow. In this article, we’ll explore four methods you can try at home to unclog and clean a bathtub drain.

1. Boiling Water

One of the easiest and most accessible methods to clean a bathtub drain is using boiling water. Hot water can help dissolve soap scum and other debris that may be causing the clog. Pour a kettle or large pot of boiling water directly into the drain. Wait a few minutes, then check if the water starts to drain more quickly. Repeat this process if necessary until the drain is clear.

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar

This tried-and-true natural cleaning solution is perfect for clearing minor blockages in your bathtub drain. First, remove any visible debris or hair from the drain surface. Then, pour one cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by one cup of white vinegar. The mixture will create a fizzing reaction that’s effective for breaking up small clogs. Allow this solution to work for 15-30 minutes before flushing with hot water.

3. Plunger

Sometimes, all it takes is a little bit of elbow grease to unclog a bathtub drain. Place a plunger over the drain opening, ensuring there is enough water in the tub to cover the plunger’s bottom edge. Pump the plunger up and down repeatedly with force until you feel the suction clear any debris blocking the drain.

4. Drain Snake

For stubborn clogs that aren’t easily fixed by other methods, try using a drain snake or auger. A drain snake consists of a flexible cable with an auger head designed to break through blockages in pipes and drains. Insert the snake into the drain, guiding it through the pipe by turning the handle clockwise. When you feel resistance, rotate the snake to break up the clog. Once you’ve made it past the blockage, retract the drain snake and remove it from the drain.

Conclusion

Cleaning your bathtub drain is essential for maintaining a functional bathroom and preventing water damage to your home. With these four methods in your arsenal, you’ll be well-prepared to tackle any stubborn clog. Remember to practice preventative maintenance, such as regularly cleaning drain stoppers and using a hair catcher, to avoid future clogs in your bathtub drain.
