4 Ways to Care for a Dog with a Torn ACL

A torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in dogs is a common injury that can cause pain, discomfort and reduced mobility for your furry friend. Giving your dog the best possible care is crucial to help them recover and regain their strength. Here are four ways to care for a dog with a torn ACL.

1. Visit Your Veterinarian

The first step in caring for a dog with a torn ACL is to consult with your veterinarian. They will be able to diagnose the severity of the injury and recommend the most suitable course of treatment. Depending on the extent of the tear, treatment options might include anti-inflammatory medications, pain management, or even surgery. Follow your vet’s advice on post-surgery care if required and attend all follow-up appointments.

2. Manage Your Dog’s Weight

It is crucial to maintain a healthy weight for a dog with an injured ACL, as carrying extra pounds can put added stress on their joints. Feeding your dog with appropriate portions of high-quality pet food and providing low-impact exercises like swimming or gentle walks can help manage their weight without causing further damage to their joint.

3. Provide Physical Support

Dogs with a torn ACL often need additional physical support and assistance as they move around. A supportive harness or sling can help you lift your dog safely when getting in and out of vehicles or going up and down stairs without putting unnecessary strain on their injured leg. You can also consider using an orthopedic bed or adding extra padding to their sleeping area, providing extra comfort during rest times.

4. Implement A Rehabilitation Plan

Physical therapy is often necessary for optimal recovery from an ACL injury, especially if surgery has been performed. Work closely with your veterinarian or animal physiotherapist to develop an individualized rehabilitation plan for your dog’s specific needs. This may include stretches, range-of-motion exercises and gentle strengthening exercises to improve the condition of their joints and muscles, along with eventual return to their normal activities.

Caring for a dog with a torn ACL takes patience, dedication, and attentiveness. By following your veterinarian’s advice and providing the essential support and care, you can help your furry friend regain full function and return to living a happy, healthy life.
