4 Ways to Adjust Your Cabinet Drawers

Cabinet drawers are an essential part of your home’s storage solutions, but over time, they may start to sag or become misaligned. Fortunately, there are several simple ways to adjust your drawers and keep them working smoothly. In this article, we will discuss four methods you can use to adjust your cabinet drawers and prolong their life.

1. Adjusting Drawer Glides

Most modern cabinets use drawer glides, also known as drawer slides, for easy opening and closing. These glides may loosen or shift over time, causing drawers to lean or stick when being pulled out. To adjust them:

a. First, remove the drawer from the cabinet by fully extending it and gently lifting it up and out of the glides.

b. With the drawer removed, inspect the glides on both sides for any visible damage or misalignment.

c. Adjust the glides if necessary by loosening the mounting screws slightly and shifting them up, down, or horizontally until they’re level with one another.

d. When the glides are properly aligned, tighten the screws and reinstall the drawer.

2. Fixing Sagging Drawers

Sagging drawers can often be fixed by simply tightening any loose screws on the drawer bottom or adding extra support to hold it in place. Many drawers have corner brackets that secure the bottom panel to the sides of the drawer; check these brackets for loose screws.

If your drawer doesn’t have corner brackets or if they aren’t providing enough support, consider adding a wooden support strip along the center length of the drawer bottom panel underside. Simply cut a strip to fit between both ends of your drawer and screw it in place.

3. Adjusting Drawer Fronts

Drawer fronts can sometimes become loose or uneven over time due to regular wear and tear. To correct this issue:

a. Remove the drawer from its tracks.

b. Locate any loose or misaligned screws on the drawer front and tighten them as necessary.

c. If needed, adjust the positioning of the handle or knob to ensure it’s centered on the drawer front.

d. Reinstall the drawer and check for improvements.

4. Lubricating Drawer Slides

Sometimes, a simple solution like lubricating your drawer slides can make all the difference in giving your cabinet drawers a longer lifespan and smoother operation. Use a silicone-based lubricant or paraffin wax to coat the glides’ surface, making sure not to over-apply. This should help your drawers slide more easily and prevent wear on the glides.

In conclusion, regular maintenance and adjustments can go a long way in extending the life of your cabinet drawers. By following these four methods, you can keep your drawers functioning smoothly and enjoy effective home storage for years to come.
