Introduction:

Sea asparagus, also known as sea beans, Salicornia or samphire, is a unique and nutritious coastal plant that has gained popularity among chefs and food enthusiasts. It is often used as a substitute for traditional asparagus and can be cooked in a variety of ways. Here, we will explore four simple methods for cooking sea asparagus to bring out its distinct briny flavor and succulent texture.

1) Steaming Sea Asparagus:

Steaming helps retain the nutrients in sea asparagus, ensuring that you can enjoy their full health benefits. To steam sea asparagus:

– Fill a pot with water and place a steaming basket over it.

– Gently lay the sea asparagus in the steaming basket.

– Cover the pot with a lid and cook on medium heat for 3 – 5 minutes, until tender but still crunchy.

– Serve hot with a squeeze of lemon or your favorite sauce.

2) Sautéing Sea Asparagus:

The slightly salty taste of sea asparagus pairs perfectly with garlic and olive oil in this simple sauté. Follow these steps:

– In a non-stick pan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat.

– Add 2 cloves of minced garlic and cook until fragrant.

– Add 1 cup of chopped sea asparagus to the pan and sauté for 2 – 3 minutes, making sure not to overcook them.

– Sprinkle with pepper and serve immediately.

3) Blanched Sea Asparagus Salad:

Blanching keeps the sea asparagus crunchy while enhancing its vibrant green color. Prepare this refreshing salad by:

– Bringing a pot of water to boil and add salt to taste.

– Once boiling, add sea asparagus to the water and blanch for 1 – 2 minutes.

– Drain the sea asparagus and transfer immediately to an ice bath to stop the cooking process.

– After cooling, pat dry and combine with other salad ingredients like cherry tomatoes, cucumber, and mixed greens. Drizzle with a simple vinaigrette and enjoy!

4) Sea Asparagus Stir-Fry:

Sea asparagus makes for a delicious addition to any vegetable stir-fry. To cook sea asparagus stir-fry:

– Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wok or large frying pan over medium-high heat.

– Add your choice of vegetables (such as bell peppers, onions, carrots) and stir-fry for 2 – 3 minutes.

– Add the sea asparagus along with your preferred seasoning (soy sauce, ginger, garlic) and stir-fry for another 2 minutes or until the vegetables are cooked but still crisp.

– Serve hot over rice or noodles.

Conclusion:

These four simple methods for cooking sea asparagus are just the beginning when it comes to experimenting with this versatile plant. It can be added to dishes ranging from pasta to seafood entrees, offering a hint of seaside flavor in each bite. Give these techniques a try and discover the culinary possibilities of sea asparagus!
